I've just started modelling some stuff in Sketchup (I already had some experience in 3DSMax and Maya), does anyone have any tips on how to organize the case (as in, sorting out all the components, so that I can easily move panels and stuff)?

i always group the components in my models, like this :hardware, case, watercooling, etc...
and then other groups inside of the main groups, "motherboard, gpu, psu, hdd..." "side panel, bottom panel, fans...", " cpu block, tubing, radiator, pump..."

then you can easily edit what you want and hide the rest. and use the "Outliner" tool to easily access a specific part.

Groups are your best friend :) Select what you want to group together, e.g. the side panel, then right click -> group. THen go Window -> layers and Window -> entity info. In the layer window, make a new layer (click the +). Click the side panel, then in the entity window change the layer to your new layer. Then in the layer window untick that layer, and the thing you grouped will disappear. I group everything :) BTW to open a group, double click it.

Thanks, I'll give that a go. Whats the difference between Components and Groups? Is it just that you can easily create a new Components? Also, thanks for the heads-up about the Outliner tool, didn't know that existed :thumb:

if you use components instead of groups, if you duplicate a component, then when you edit in one, it will also edit in the second

The biggest advantage of components is not only that when you edit the component every instance in your scene is edited, they're also only saved once. That can be a great difference in filesize.

Yeh that is a very good point Aterius. Really useful for high detail components like GPUs etc.

Nah it's not that important in graphic cards most of the time. In mainboards it's really important, with hundreds of caps. The Tyan Thunder 4 socket board I did a while back had a few hundred caps and small chips. It was more than 30mb, I don't even want to imagine how big it would have been with every capacitor as a group... or having to change something in all of them. :D

Which reminds me... Would somebody mind to do a few corrections for me (basically: add a socket F) so I can upload it to the collection? I am stuck with a netbook at the time being, and it just can't handle the file. I tried a few times and it crashes. This one I am talking about:

    and the extension board:

You'd only have to remove the modified socket 775 and add a socket F.

Is anyone getting strange renderings with this fan?:
I colored the fans white, and the shading is very weird. See what I mean?:

Edit: Just realised that you can see the strange shading in the original picture. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

That model is broken a bit. It also has too few polygones. Use another one. :)
