Skimlinks gone? I just noticed i hadn't seen 1, went to try and find 1 and i can't.

If they have reduced the amount they show up i could live with this amount.

I think that the 10 pages of negative feedback would be a blaring signal that at-least the Forums should be off limit for skimlinks! I don't mind the banner adds at the top of the page or even if you have adds outside of the post (i.e. the margins not used by forums) BUT having links inside of peoples post is utterly un-acceptable and can change what the poster is recommending/ not recommending, or just to agree with previous posters can affect sponsorship/sponsorship opportunities. P.S. if you look at my earlier post #37 there are 6 skim links there.

NOW the skim links don't show up with text that say "skimlink or advertisement" they just show up as a normal Link! WTF now even more deceiving/infuriating!

Anything said here can be used UNI

Nope, i still see 6 here: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=201776 when using IE instead of Firefox which obviously doesn't have Noscript.

I think Dennis Publishing need to address this issue as a matter of urgency as there are two major aspects of concern.

    1. The links are not obviously identifiable as adverts.
    2. By embedding them in a post, without acknowledging that they are ad's, they are misleading.

I would love to know who thinks they are a good idea and should stay??? Just to ask reasons why.

Not only that, but why all the links generated are US-based - not just newegg, as others have mentioned, but the Amazon and eBay links are also the .com (US) versions, not the UK versions. So not only are we being bombarded by invasive advertising, we're being bombarded by pointless invasive advertising.

Surely as "the UK's leading online destination" we should at least get UK-specific advertising?

A person that left the forums because of advertising....

    ( I miss Doug :( )
News articles and main page stuff I can tolerate. In the forums, in someone's post, not a chance.

Only 83 people have voted so far. There must be more than 83 regular members of bit-tech. I would like to see over 200 votes case by Monday morning. Please, tell your friends.

Disagree. As much as I dislike intellitxt, at least it is immediately obvious this is a sponsored link. And in that case, what you say more or less holds true. You see it is an ad, you chose not to click.
The only way to see this with the skimlinks is by hovering over them and checking the tag. So bit tech is forcing me to hover over every link in every forum post just to check it was actually posted by the forum user, not by some advertising bot.
That's *NOT* choice, that's forcing me to do something extra.
Or more accurately, it is a different choice: blacklisting bit-tech in my ad blocker, or simply stop visiting.

    I've just had a thought.

Those that are new here or already use a script/ad blocker may not even know about skimlinks or what they are. I didn't even know they existed until I saw this thread (I run NoScript always, only allowing bit-tech.net).

Could the OP edit his/her first post with a short explanation of what they are?

I agree with your point but you have a solution already: ad blocking. You are exercising consumer choice.

I don't mind them in other people's posts but I hate it when one appears in something I've written!

Definitely none of these in the forums please, they just cause confusion. If I see a link within the text I assume it is a link related to something the poster is saying. Bit-tech is the ONLY site I have excluded from adblock and I'm also a mag subscriber... isn't that enough? Are we heading towards subscriber and non-subscriber forum/site layouts so that only non-subs get pestered by advertising? I wouldn't mind that...

I wouldn't like different subscriber/non-subscriber forums. I had been lurking here for about a year before joining, only then did I decide to buy the mag. The forum is a great way of introducing people to the magazine - in fact, without a hint of sarcasm, the forum and it's member's are a fantastic advertisment for the magazine.

Introducing a subcriber/non-subscriber apartheid would go against the spirit that exists here today.
