So I want to build an electrobus.. Like the one here But with a sliding potentiometer, but I am not sure if I can do thise because the schematic shows the pot having 3 connections, and the image of the slider pot shows only 2... Here are the slider pots I am talking about: Link Anyone know anything about this?
It'll be fine. A pot/rheostat/whatever will generally have 3 connections: one to either end of the resistance element and the third in the middle to the 'wiper'. A 2-pin one will only have a connection to one end of the resistance element, and the second will be to the wiper.
You've a fault on your monitor, mine shows 4 legs. They're audio/log taper, so not really best for a rheobus. Look out for linear.
In the UK, http://www.rapidelectronics.co.uk/r...CAT_CODE=30378&STK_PROD_CODE=M29589&XPAGENO=1 is the one you want. But in Canada ?
tmod: Digi-Key doesn't stock any slide pots, so the minimun quantity I'd have to buy is 1000 http://dkc1.digikey.com/CA/HELP/help09.html
Thanks for the links, I know Newark doesn't have any at a reasonable price... $37 american... I found another in the UK though http://www.mutr.co.uk/prodDetail.aspx?prodID=330 Update: Futurelec has a 10K Slide Pot, but it's taper... Is that right? Jameco shows linear and taper in the same space on this page for a normal pot... http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=91&prrfnbr=3781&cgrfnbr=682&ctgys=503;518;682; I'm not sure what I'm looking for other than it being linear, and not log. The two pages from the UK seem to have the same one that I need, but I don't want to spend more on shipping than the product is worth ... Update again: Acording to this A linear pot is ("type B") A log pot ("type A") On the futurelec site, for pots here It says there are type B, and thus linear... But on the definition site above, its says that "The "log pot" is used as the volume control in audio amplifiers, because the amplitude response of the human ear is also logarithmic" and on the Futurelec site it says "Sliding Potentiometer New Range of Sliding Potentiometers in Type B, ideal for volume and sound projects." So if they are linear or type B, that is the one I want?
The Panasonic slide-pots page at Digikey also confirms Type B are linear, so the type you want. Get the Futurelec ones. Linear types can be used for audio, it's easy to convert a linear to a pseudo-log taper with a parallel resistor, but hard to convert log to linear.
Thanks I ordered up 10 of them, some resistor grab bags, and some heatsinks for my regulators from fututelec... $3 for shipping!!!
can you use these for a simple fan controller? or does it need to be the 25-50 ohm variety? if it's possible, i would really love to have 6 or so of the sliders mounted on a nice little panel, but they all seem to be rated as 1k or higher.. Vazz
Apart from the resistance, they won't handle the fan current as simple rheostats, they're only 0.5W at best. Now, one like this would be OK...
If you read the whole post you would see the Electrobus circuit I'm going to be using, the dont make 20ohm or 50ohm ones (that I could find, anyway)... So you have to use them with a regulator of some sort.
