I've got one of the old Pioneers... They're good drives, if a bit loud when they're playing DVDs.

There are also laptop-sized slot-load DVD drives, both DVD burners and regular DVD drives. Would one of those fit?

Rubbish better than Americans I know at my school :wallbash: .

On another note they are quite expensive but you can
    A) find a Laptop slimline slotload make a custom bracket
    B) modify a normal tray load and make it less *bam look at that DVD burner*

I would try to find slot load as they are teh sexy and cool.

Check ebay for Pioneer 106s (older old model) and 120s (newer old model).

Ive owned both. My 106 died :( but had a lovely smooth insert dvd mechanism but the 120s is very well built.
