If you've not seen the news, The Scotish Executive has voted unanimously to Join the Irish in a ban on smoking in public areas. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3996587.stm What I want to know is do you think that this will force the other regions of the UK (Wales and England) to bring in similar bans? Also, are you in favour of a ban or not? Vote now!
Whining pathetic nanny state crap. What's wrong with enforcing no smoking areas (if they're not already?), and better air-con regulations for pubs? Open a window? Or, to paraphrase Bill Hicks, take a look at the world around you, stick your anti-smoking laws up your ass, and put your time and effort into doing some real good for once. In case you haven't guessed, I'm a smoker, and don't support a ban.
As a now ex-smoker I feel the ban should come into effect. I see no reason why if I feel I want to go out I should have to breathe in air that will damage my lungs and make me stink. As it is smokers have the choice of wether they want to smoke or not, yet if I go into a pub/bar I do not get the choice as to wether I want to breathe in their smoke or not. Should be back as the victorians had it, a non smoking bar and then a smoking room seperate to the main bar.
I think an all out public ban is very nanny-state, however i would support it. I'd much prefer say, making it a legal requirement for a person to stop smoking if asked by someone to do so.
I used to smoke, I quit about 3 years ago and I totally support the bans. Id sort of agree with the nanny state comment except smokeing doesnt just effect you it effects others arround you. It should be up to the smoker to find somewhere where it doesnt effect other people rather than for those people to avoid public places because of the smokers. Also whatever people think, it is in their best interests to quit, anything that helps has to be a good thing.
I hate coming back from pubs and clubs and my clothes reaking of smoke, to put them somewhere, and wake up in the morning and my whole bedroom smell like im a 20 a day man, its nasty, if you went someone and someone threw a pint of beer on you, you would be pissed off and especially not want to go home, take your clothes off and wake up to find your room stinking of stale alcohol... Smoking is dirty, and the sooner it dies out, or kills them off the better imho - M@
I am a non-smoker and I am just waiting for a ban to be put in place. I have had numerous meals absolutely ruined by some inconsiderate ******* lighting up nearby and blowing smoke all over the bloody place. I don't care if smokers want to kill themselves in the privacy of their home, or in some well ventilated area. But please don't take me with you.
this is proposed in Brighton, and will almost certainly happen . edit:: also my college is no smoking except for in one courtyard.
I'd say that in a public place, such as walking down the street, that it shuold be banned, but in pubs and stuff? No. Simply because we already have smoking/non-smoking areas which are enforced. I put a vote to yes, but really it shouldn't include pubs.
I think it's a good idea. As was said before, it sucks when you come back from a pub and your clothes stink. However there are a couple of pubs around here which have smoking/non smoking on different floors which is a little better. Banning in totally public places may be a bit much, but if it makes people quit then sure, it's definitely worth it.
People should be allowed to smoke in their own homes or designated smoking areas which have adequate ventilation away from non-smokers. Public smoking should be classed as any other anti-social behaviour. To paraphrase Roy Castle.. oh hold on, he could barely say anything because he suffered from lung cancer, directly attributed to playing in smoky clubs before the dangers of passive smoking were understood. Bill Hicks may have had his funny moments but his views on smoking aren't one of them.
I do not smoke, and support a ban.. I voted for that, I agree, smoking should be banned, I hate smoking, why should other people get big smoke clouds in there face. I can't wait till the ban take action, im all for it. I hate smoking and have nothing to favor it. Useless/ waste time of money and health. Just a big money market..... - Sc0rian
I don't smoke (Dad does though) and support a ban of smoking in bars and clubs 100%. I don't mind people smoking in open spacious public areas where the smoke will have no affect on anyone but themselves. For those of you who don't support the ban maybe spare a thought to the pub/bar/club workers who have to work in an environment breathing in smoke that can have an adverse affect on their health. From personal experience I can say that it's not very enjoyable.
Only in enclosed public spaces. Outside should be ok. Other then that, yay for ban. Go take your cancer club elsewhere
I smoke, and I am going find it hard to take the ban in its current form. I do however understand the reasons and why non-smokers would support such an action. I believe the ban should only apply to enclosed public places. Edit - all this talking about smoking, I need a ciggy.
I'm a non smoker and strongly support any public smoking ban. It's a drug addiction, the only difference between between being a smoker and a junkie or a smack head is the police won't arrest you if they find you in possession. Smoking however causes suffering to millions of people who aren't drug addicts and are forced to be around smokers and their acrid death stench. I'm sick of having the air around me turned foul by smokers, feeling my throat become gravelly and sore as I breathe in their fumes, feeling my eyes becoming red and inflamed from their fumes and most of all smelling the absolute stench that is left on my body and clothes after being in proximity to smokers.
smoking should just be banned everywhere. It effects to many things around you. Yourself, people you love, even little kids in a negative way. No im not some anti smoke finatic. I smoked 2 packs a day for 10 years. More on weekends when just sitting there tapping away at the keyboard. Ive been smoke free for over a year now and can honestly say its time to get rid of that crap for good. The only reason its still around is because its an addictive substance. If there was no nicotine in smokes they would have been out of buisness along time ago.
Dude walking down the street is fine as the smoke has somewhere to disappate to. I dont know about where you live but Im yet to find a non-smoking area that is actually enclosed so that no smoke reaches it. Most are just an area that you cant smoke in, yet the smoke can drift in.
