    Original story

Normally I'm inclined to give a well conducted study the benefit of the doubt, but this one is stretching my credibility just a bit too far.

Load of crap imo. Surely if films have this much of an effect then seeing people smoking in public would have untold consequences on the numbers of kids smoking? :hehe::wallbash:

I totally agree with you. I started smoking at 14 coz the "cool kids" were doing it, and it was a way of secretly rebelling against my parents. I've now been smoking for 21 years and wish I had never started. I've tried to stop a few times but it is a kind of crutch to me now.

Luckily I have a father who's smoked since he was 18 (a LONG time before I was born) and my mother only stopped before she had me. Getting all the "don't smoke" lectures from my parents pretty much kept me away from it up until uni; at which point, I started smoking reefer quite regularly & the occasional cig when there was nothing else to do. Lucky for me I don't seem to get addicted that easily and I just stopped, I know it's been crap for my dad and he's been smoking probably 35 years now, 20 a day and won't even attempt to quit anymore (he's tried lots :blah:)

At the end of the day, theres always a reason you start smoking (I did it for a laugh, which it was, socially with a lot of my friends), but I very much doubt its something as retarded as how often you see smoking in films and more likely to do with peer pressure or teenage angst or even just a way to keep yourself busy :hehe:

All this whining about and hyped-up "general feeling against smoking" is what makes kids light up. I lit up not long before turning 12 because it just wasn't allowed. Now I'm older and I've been allowed to smoke for quite some time, it's even better. Especially now I have been forced to go stand outside of the pub, so I can tell all the kids how awesome and cool smoking is (whilst handing out free copies of a compilation of de Sade's works to those who appear to be old enough to read).

I started because I was curious what all the fuss was about. Then I started in my last year of comp (when I turned 16, and then kinda quit over the summer (mainly because i couldn't get away from parents to spark up)

Then when I went to college, I re-started. Smoked for about a year, didn't get too hooked to it, gave up when I went to work for the accursed DVLA, then all my mates there were smokers so we all just used to take 10 minute *** breaks all over the shop. Then I quit that particular hellhole - went to college, continued to smoke, as the atmos there was most stressful, and smoking continued to chill me out. Now I'm working in beloved JD Sports, and I'm glad to say that I only smoke when I'm having a REALLY bad day.

And no doubt kids swear because they hear it constantly in modern films? Can I have that research grant? ;)

I started because I was a shy loner... made some amazing friends asking strangers for a light over the years:thumb: obvious downside would be the whole chronic death :eeek:

You can ALWAYS find evidence to support your viewpoint no matter how outrageous... just check out some threads:D

My standard counter for these research docs:rolleyes: is look who fronted the money and guess who it agrees with

I've never seen anyone smoke in the movie theatre.

I'm 18 and do it simply because I can, though not often, just the occasional thing when some of my friends come, back from school in places far away. Only person who I think is cool doing it is Slash, but for some reason. Don't ask my why, i don't have a reason, I just do.

I've smoked once, and never again, don't see the point in it, I don't enjoy it at all.

when i was 11 i started smoking, but no, not because of some movies, but out of curiosity, wanting to do something forbidden and due to wrong friends... i actually grew up without a tv, or a computer.... so they cant be blamed at all for what i did.

well, half a bit more than half a year ago when i came to the uk i said screw it and stopped form one day to the other and the prices here helped staying away from it too.
