Ok - I'm messing about with my network at the moment, and I want to add a 'server' to the orange NIC (Not sure what it's going to serve yet - maybe a part time website, maybe games - I dunno what's feasible with a celery 366 with 64mb)

What I need to know is am I right in saying you need a cross over cable from the orange smoothwall NIC to the server's NIC? I know I had to so this when I only had two PC's and no hub (many years ago).

    Am I right?

And BTW, advice on what to do with said server when it's installed would be nice - OS, things to 'serve' etc etc.

    Ta in advance,

    GOO

Yes correct, but make sure say your network is 192.168.0.1 to set the orange card on the smoothie to 192.168.1.1 or similar.
As Ive never done this I could be talking b*llocks
    :D

    Ta Herbs.

Anybody thoughts on OS / Servery type stuff?

(Remember, I'm doing this because I've got the spare equipment and want to muck about with it - I've got no experience whatsoever in running a server)

If you are going to use it as a web server then just install something like redhat linux.

If it is going to be a fileserver then I would recommend Windows 2000, I have run it as a fileserver on a machine with only 64mb RAM with no problems whatsoever serving 4 pcs.

I think running a counterstrike server or something would be easily possible on that machine, but I don't know where you get the software.

agree with adam...for a fileserver/ftp server win2k is very nice and stable...

but depends what u wanna do with it...make it into an mp3 server if u got plenty of mp3s....

red hat is one of the ones that you have to pay for....erm but im sure youd be able to borrow a copy of mr kazaa....

otherwise for a good linux distro run debian (my personal fav) or slackware...both are quite good.... :D

People on ebay sell those disks for next to nothing, much better to let them do all the work really.
