Ok, Im now at my wits end.

I Have the SN45G which im running with a 1700+ with the case off. With the case on it shuts down and the red overheat led comes on.

My temps according to MBM in windows with the case off are around 60 c, ive just put a fan directly on top of wher the ICE unit sits on top of the CPU and its now 45/46 c.

Ive checked the thermal compound, shim and ICE installations and they are all fine. Tried re-doing these about 5 times so its defo nothing to do with this.

I cant run a CPU any higher than a 1700+ without the thing shutting down due to overtemp LED coming on. Even a mobile barton (Alot cooler than normal !?!?!) will cause the thing to shutdown.

Now I thought that the overtemp thing was set to 85 c ? Well im certainly not reaching that. Bios says arounf 60c is the highest i get.

So whats up ? Can I set the overtemp thing any higher ? Or any solutions to this prob ?

    Cheers

    Tom.

Sounds like the ice unit might be buggered. If it has a hole in the heatpipes for vapour to escape it doesnt work.

Hmm could be that. How would I get a new one/test it ?

I think though for some reason the automatic shutdown thing is set to 60 c.

Can i change it in anyway ?

itll be in the bios somewhere, id fix the cooling before the chip though. dunno how youd test it?

have you got another heat sink that you could try? It doesn't need to be an ICE unit just to check.

Another thought, is the heatsink screwed down as far as it will go. With the SN45G (i have one) you cannot overtighten it (well unless your arnie)!

As a last resort stick a standard skt-A heatsink on the cpu - If it works OK then the ICE is knackered so RMA it (you should be able to RMA just the heatpipe, I did for a faulty PSU in my SK41).

Check the core voltage against the spec for the CPU to check its not overvolting it as that would cause a big increase in heat.

Also try it without the shim - you shouldnt have any problem its just a saftey precaution (check you didnt leave the plastic film on the shim as that will cause poor contact).
