having upgraded from iPod Shuffle 1st gen + a cheap Sony k510i to a second hand relatively cheap iPhone 2G (bought here, on Bittech). and not being a very music heavy user. i love it, especially love the 3rd party applications.

really, they worth a lot on ebay, if you hate it that much, turn it into cash. iPhone is a love it or hate it thing, and if you want to use any one of the Apple product, you have to use the whole package. (iPhone requires iTunes, iTunes runs best on a Mac, etc)
no one can force you to love the Apple package.

After all this disliking posts of Ipod, I really don't understand why it is so popular and so bestselling product for so long time ... I think it isn't so bad... escept those apple applications.

 

It's so popular because it's made by Apple, and Apple is a fashion statement. is that not blindingly obvious?

I have a 1st generation iPhone and it's been perfect for me. At first the camera didn't impress me much because my previous phone was the SE 850i but I wasn't too bothered.

At the end of the day, for the amount of money it costs and the love/hate of it for the nation, you'd be a mug not to go and research into it and have a good play with one in a shop before making the purchase.

I just bought a Philips MP3 player, 8GB with a good screen, got it for a good price on sale, and I'm about ready to put it on eBay. It only wants to work through WMP11, and even when I set up the file structure on the drive manually the way I want it, when I go to play something through the device it shows not the file structure I set up, but the default one.

I'll probably stick with it for a while, but I am going to be looking for a new player. The iRivers have come highly recommended, but I haven't found a model I really like.

 

Both of my parents have had the 4gb 1st gen, and they can't live without them.. Apparently the iPhone is great, even if just for calls and random apps.

I don't have a use for most of the features. If the Samsung Armani phone wasn't so insanely priced, I would want one. It's basically an iPhone, just smaller. If only my Samsung D807 had a headphone jack... Woe is me.

Guh, why the current trend with big touch screens? Touching a screen makes it dirty. Dirty screens drive me insane. It seems high tech, but I think that I can be more efficient with my few year old cell phone than someone can with an iPhone. It just seems a little cliche, just because it was on Star Trek back in the 60s doesn't mean that it's the way of the future. If only my finger was completely sterile.

 

This is on a PC I assume? Yeah, the PC version of iTunes sucks. For some reason, the PC version doesn't play with big libraries. Sometimes it doesn't even with small libraries. I've had troubles with it when a large podcast downloaded - it would always freeze. Thing is, iTunes is a different beast running on OS X. As with NoahFuLing, it has never crashed for me. I would assume his experience is probably also on OS X.

I completely understand how you feel about Apple's inability to let you just use the player the way you want.

I bought a nano the first day it was available and it was the first Apple product I owned.
I HATED iTunes to the point that I went out and bought anapod explorer that allowed me to at least transfer tunes without itunes etc.

Then, I discovered Rockbox and never looked back, until the stupid screen died.

If you want an MP3 player, you can do much worse than the Sandisk Sansa players.
I have an E280 and it pwns.
I've installed rockbox on that too and its awesome.

 

Can you set up the file system the way you want in the Sandisks? For example, if you put a bunch of songs in a folder can it just see that folder as an album and ignore the ID3 tags? My headache is I have a lot of stuff that is either compliation albums or else I have one song from an artist I like. Unfortunatly, that means that I have a zillion artists and albums on my player menu, when I really want maybe 30 folders for bands I have a fully album or albums of and everything else in a folder called "everything else".

whats happened now is that i have a cheap K530 with a 2GB M2 card, which is so easy and fun to use, and less painful than anything else. When i get my W890i back from repair i'll stick with that. I'm so glad i gave it back to my housemate, she loves her 2nd gen iphone, and thats fine.

Must be the Friday evening syndrome but my brain can't process what you described.

I can't remember how useful the original sandisk software is but I seem to remember that it has options to use a database method (like ipods) or a file system method. It also allows you to select the USB method between media player (like ipod needing something like media player) or mass storage device (like a portable hdd or flash drive).

Coming from my ipod it was definately a breath of fresh air.
The only software you need to install is the movie transfer software (assuming you want to transfer media clips) which is a small app that does a great job scaling files to fit the screen etc. For music, you don't need any software installed.

The best thing about it is that its supported by rockbox.
Rockbox pwns and the latest version has just been released allowing playback of over 15 music formats inc FLAC and OGG etc.
