ok, I hope someone here can help me out with this. The Geek Squad at Best Buy told me it would cost $199 bucks to fix my moniter and I really dont think that is too reasonable. so any help I can get is greatly appreciated!! so my husband was given a this computer from a family friend (hella memory I cant wait to use it!) and it runs great and everything. The problem is the screen resolution. I have a 19" Acer flat panel moniter that hooks up to it just fine, but everytime we set it to the 1600 x 900, the screen goes black and then comes back still at default. On this computer it works and sets just fine, but on the new one we just cannot get it to stick. any ideas? Thank you!
1600*900 - are you sure that`s the right resolution. i thought 19 inch flat panels were all 1440x900.
ya, i checked it before I posted... thats what I have it at right now. I tried setting it at any resolution just to see if it would take, and none would. I dont understand what it is, the computer was 'F disked' (if that makes any sense) and then had windows XP installed and that is it, clean slate.....it will take new settings for everything BUT the resolution
in addition to that, can you tell us as much about the parts in the computer as possible? I'm mainly looking at the video card here but anything else you can add will help. If you dont know, try this: hit the start button click on "run" in the box that opens type in "dxdiag" a new window will open, at the top of the window you will see several tabs, one of them is called "display" click on it you should see lots of info, look for "name" and see whats beside it. that (should be) your video card. once we have that we can tell you where to get drivers for it. Of course I am assuming that you dont know how to do any of this. sorry if you do. Oh, and what monitor is it? Also do you know what refresh rate its being set at when you change the resolution? If not we can tell you how to find it. setting it too high may cause this problem.
I don't know if this will help at all my my 19" widescreen Acer will ONLY run at 1440 * 900. You probably just have to keep it at that setting.
199$?! that is the price of a new Acer Monitor... If that is the case, don't' repair it, just buy a new one.
Hi Heather, try setting it to the resolutions suggested above. Other than that we need as much detail about the machine as possible - what kind of cable (blue ends or white ends) goes into the monitor from your graphics card? Has all the drivers been installed correctly - has Windows been fully updated?
Yaah, some monitors have two types of connections, a DVI and a VGA connection. If your Graphics card supports it try alternating between the cables. And make sure you have the relavent software installed for your gprahics card i.e. a Nvidia Geforce 8800gt card's software is available from www.nvidia.com etc.
sorry it took me so long to reply...supertoad as soon as you posted you second reply I turned the old comp off and the new one on and installed the CD for the graphics card and it WORKED! GoodBytes--yea I told the guy that, I only paid 119 for the moniter at staples... what made me really mad is I only knew which CD was for the grapics card because I held that cd and one other up (cause there was no titles on them) to ask if either of these needed to be installed and he said no. Thats when he said that he would need to take it in to 'investigate' what the problem was and that it would be that much. I really feel now like Best Buy just cares about trying to get the money. Thank you so much to everyone who responded, I have never seen a forum where people are so helpful. =) Im def. going to be staying around. have a great sunday!
Drivers would be the first thing to check and anyone with an ounce of computer expertise would know that straight away. I would actually be tempted to report him to trading standards as he (or she) was blatantly trying to con you! (It would be like a car mechanic charging you $200 when all was wrong was that you had no gas in the tank...)
I would pay that much! Can't you do some serious damage not having any fuel? Certainly running out of central heating oil screws up the entire system at home because you get air bubbles through the whole fuel system and it cost a lot to fix.
wow $199 that's to much and you can buy a new one for that price.. just go to the display properties/advance tick the option to hide resolutions that can not be displayed !!
