Socket 754 motherboards are pretty much outdated. I'd suggest to buy a whole new computer.

What are your complete systems specs and what will you be using the computer for (web surfing, gaming, video editing etc.)?

You'll have a hard time finding a new skt 754 cpu. You may find the odd Sempron but pretty much forget any Athlon64's.

Ebay is your best bet but because of their rarity you'll looking at some steep prices if you want the top end cpu's.

    3200's are going for £20+, 3400's £50+ and the top 3700's for £70+

TBH I'd suggest to buy more RAM memory instead of a new CPU.

There are two types of DDR SDRAM, DDR and DDR2. They are not compatible with each other. DDR2 is newer and is replacing DDR. Read more on Wikipedia if you want.

With a computer of the age yours is, it's using DDR propably. But £8 is nearly nothing and if t doesn't fit it doesn't matter very much.

If it fits and works you'll notice a HUGE difference. :D

Doesn't look like that RAM is so cheap any more.

My system (see sig) is s754. An Athlon 3200+ is significantly faster than a Sempron 2800, so if you can get one for £20 it's probably worth it. But like other people have said, an extra 512mb of ram would make all the difference. 2Gb would be even better but the cost/benefit isn't quite so great obviously.

However, instead of throwing money at old technology, you could consider saving the money and upgrading the whole lot :naughty:

I'm still rocking my AMD 3200+ 754pin. Just OC it if you want some life in it.

But the best option is to upgrade the whole rig.
