Is there a way to share files over a network with some sort of download manager?

A group of us want to share large files via the network in my sixth form houses (residential school). However although the buildings are new, the people who built the place didnt install the network properly and the hub is crappy - 10mbps and keeps dropping out every so often for a few mins.

We have tried to share by creating webpages and downloading files, but its not reliable. We are looking to download files with a software that allows resuming, over a network - programs like getright doesnt allow that on a network.

And dont say anything about upgrading the network - the cabling for some reason are not cat5e, so we cant have 100mbps, and there are 6 network hubs, connected via firewire, so according the to the school, too expensive to replace... :miffed:

As ^^ said, FTPing's way. You can limit the total number of connections and the download speed to prevent people from hammouring your hard drive as well.

    'tis what I do.

which ftp program is the best (with resuming) - I dont wanna pay for it btw.

And as for gigabit, I wish - but only one person's mobo as far as I know can support gigabit! But for bandwidth, yeah it'll help.

AFAIK apache only deals with http traffic...

    I use BulletProof FTP server.

I used to use "serveU" or something similar. BPFTP server will do it too. Netlimiter is a great program for limiting overall upload/download speed on a per-program basis.
