Hi Everyone, Before I ask for help I will say I have just passed my 1000th WU and 400,000 point barrier Linkage Well, I'm writing a project about F@H and building a dedicated folding machine, and I am not gonna pretend I know it all about the weird and wonderful clients you guys out there have got running. When it comes to overclocking, or configuring a system I'm in my element. But too be fair I've never run a NotFred, nor do I know why he is "Not Fred" , and why he doesn't make up his mind about what his bloomin' name is! So I'll list and number and if anyone can pitch in that would be awesome, also appreciate any feedback from you guys about the FAH project that I can roll in , When I'm done (will be a while mind ^_^) i'll upload it somewhere if anyone wants to read it ^_^ 1) What's the difference between DEINO and MPICH Smp clients for windows? 2) Whats BigAdv and how does it work? I'm aware you need a passkey and a core i7 at 3.6Ghz+ or an 8 core but what else do you have to do? 3) NotFred... From what I've researched its a Linux FAH client that can be run off a pendrive or CD? which i take it means you can run a folding machine off a pendrive without a HDD , which I'd really like to try. Does it support GPU and SMP folding? Guide would be great if someone knows a good one. 4) Does anyone know any good guides for Linux folding? (SMP or GPU) 5) What's Linux Driver support for FAH like? for that reason what are linux drivers like? Links appreciated for the latter ^_^ 6) Mac OS X client. anyone got any experience with it? Run it at all? what sort of PPD can you get with it. Is there any Mac GPU client? or do you have to use Bootcamp? 7) Finally Just any random stuff that any one knows for Fah that could come in useful ^_^ Thanks in Advance everyone I reckon I'm gonna owe a few people a good few pints
You can find most of the answers on the official Stanford High Performance Client pages. Look for the client of interest, then download the FAQ and Installation instructions; more material can be found in the appropriate pages of the Wiki and announcements in the Forums. If you find out why 'Not Fred' I'd be mildly interested
Like Christopher says the Stanford site is full of information. Here's some quick answers. 1) What's the difference between DEINO and MPICH Smp clients for windows? None if you use the 6.29 beta client & select the a3 core using advanced methods. Just download the appropriate client for your Win OS. 2) Whats BigAdv and how does it work? I'm aware you need a passkey and a core i7 at 3.6Ghz+ or an 8 core but what else do you have to do? Bigadv is a very large a2 core work unit with a bonus points scheme. You need to first qualify a passkey by returning 10 a2 WUs of which 80% mst be returned within the preferred dealine. You need to either run native Linux or VM Linux using the 6.24 client & the -bigadv flag 3) NotFred... From what I've researched its a Linux FAH client that can be run off a pendrive or CD? which i take it means you can run a folding machine off a pendrive without a HDD , which I'd really like to try. Does it support GPU and SMP folding? Guide would be great if someone knows a good one. SMP folding only. 4) Does anyone know any good guides for Linux folding? (SMP or GPU) What Christopher says; the Stanford instuctions can be followed if you use Ubuntu. 5) What's Linux Driver support for FAH like? for that reason what are linux drivers like? Links appreciated for the latter ^_^ GPU folding is currently limited to a workaround using WINE. It is slower than using native Windows. Hopefully this will be overcome with new developments later this year. 6) Mac OS X client. anyone got any experience with it? Run it at all? what sort of PPD can you get with it. Is there any Mac GPU client? or do you have to use Bootcamp? No idea. Someone on here had issues after planning to fold on his entire school's core2 Macs. I dont believe there is Mac GPU client but I could be wrong. 7) Finally Just any random stuff that any one knows for Fah that could come in useful ^_^ Pass.
