I'm programming an application that needs to be able to connect to a SSL-secured (pop3-/imap4-)server. I have some questions however as, with the way I should program it I don't think I understand what it really is.

SSL is like when you go to webpages and there's a lock in the statusbar of your browser right? Or you're using the https:// protocol?

And SSL-secured sites/servers need a SSL-certificate right? Like you can get from verisign and stuff?

What about clients? Do they need special (free) certificates? If you look here: http://www.intelicom.si/article.php?sid=14 , the last part of the first paragraph, and further, covers the converting of a certificate, so the client does need a certificate, or am I missing something?

I've already searched google on this but can't find much usefull info... :waah:

Relix - sorry I can't help you directly, my knowledge of SSL is pretty bad.

However, Eric Rescorla has written an excellent book covering just about every aspect of SSL and TLS (Transport Layer Security), called "SSL and TLS - building secure systems" which should answer any questions you might come across in your programming. A friend of mine who writes software for internet load balancers has a copy and was having a rant a while ago about how good the book is. Details here:

    Hope this helps

Okay thanks, but I'm prolly not gonna buy it 'cause I'm on a very thight budget and will probably already have to spend $150 on special components. But thanks anyway, I'll check it out :D
