Hi every one, well I’m a canoeist, I got a kick ass boat and kick ass kit apart from my paddles they are battered but I cant afford £300 for a new set right now so I’m gonna mod the ones I got but I may need a little help. what I want to do is paint the shaft a very bright vibrant colour and paint the blades black and airbrush a design on the blades but I have no idea what paint to use, the paddles are made from carbon fibre so what paint would I use please? Also has anyone got any ideas for a pattern I could put on the blades? Thanks in advance Ill get some pics up when I bring them home. Jack
What material is the shaft made of? If its an alluminum (sp) or another type of metal I would have it powder coated for the best look/ duribility. As for the paddles, Im not really sure what paint to use. If you want them black I would say to use vynal (sp) dye. Other than that, Im not sure what eles. Hope this helped.
Sorry the whole paddle is made from carbon fibre, shaft and blades. I hate vinyl dye lol I can’t find it anywhere in the UK. thanks
well considering you can get cars with carbon fiber shells i think its pritty safe to assume that car body paint would be fine for your purposes.
hmm well other then the fact that auto paint insn't quite marine grade (it'l come off pretty quick) you can get marine paint which is oil based and use that, airbrush it and then clear coat it or you could use fiberglass resin and add pigment to it then air brush it and then add a second clear coat of resin. just make sure its either oil or resin based and not water based eg. house, car or art paint (no oil art type).
what are u talking about? why should it have to be marine grade its not as if the paddles are going to be submerged for years on end. its not as if your going to leave them submerged in water when not in use. car paint is perfectly fine, its very resistant to water and knocks if u add clear coat. i dont see car paint coming off every time it rains !! espcialy now with new paints being made to withstand ACID rain. also alot of car paints are not water based they are nitro cellulose based btw
jsut get some car paint or something similar. just make sure it's flexible enough. (i guess the paddles flex a littlebit when in use.)
there are reasons for not using automotive paint. it wouldnt adhere to the preveiously smooth surface of thee paddle very well its brittle even with a clear coat and wouldnt flex withe the paddle and it wouldnt do verry well with hitting a rock, or sand. not to mention its difficult to apply, paint it with somthing like marine paint do the air brush and clear coat it with fiberglass resin and youll have a perdy, shiny, and tough *new paddle.
Ok thanks everyone ill look into marine paint because they will have to take some wear and tear. Any ideas for a design to airbrush on? Thanks
