I never was a fan of the big JC so it's probably lost on me but Trent's version just seems much more desperate and determined. When I saw JCs version, I felt nothing more than as if I had read the words on paper.
The Johnny Cash song was on "The 100 Greatest Music Videos" the other night, very powerful indeed. Westlife have recently been violating many Frank Sinatra songs, you can't copy Frank. What about Five's cover of "We Will Rock You?" PATHETIC.
You know what I mean. Cover or no cover, his was a very powerful version. Especially when his wife is standing over him nearly in tears. She died before him.
I give the songwriter full credit for Hurt. And the director gets full credit for Johnnies video. Yeah, totally, but it's like the alpha/alfa thing. It can't go past unmentioned.
Another Brick In The Wall covered my Korn, got help me, those guys suck Can anyone do a good cover of a Pink Floyd song? I think not, no guys can re-create the sound they had going.
you can't diss 5ive! Pop needs more random UK rap in the middle of songs tbh. lol My favourite cover is Stevie Wonders version of 'we can work it out' by The Beatles. I'm sure there are many people who insist you can't do a Beatles song justice but tbh I think stevie's version is ten times better hehe.
Monkeyspank you still haven't put forth an argument for why Johnny Cash did a poor cover. I think you're just dug in a trench. I personally like that version much better than NIN's original. I love NIN, but w/ all due respect Johnny Cash is a legend. I think the key to a good cover is to add something to it using your own sound that no one expects, yet maintain the integrity of the piece and avoid doing it for kitch reasons. Hence why Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes induces projectile vomiting. EDIT: I do enjoy Limp Bizkit's cover of "faith" though, I must admit. What a lame song to begin with.
Fair comment. I'm not a Johnny Cash fan, but I have been a big fan of NIN and I Hurt has always been an amazing song. I agree that it is a good cover but I don't think it improves on the original in any way and I think that the genius of the song is being overshadowed by Johnny Cash. the NIN version is much better IMO. Yeah it's a good cover, but in my eyes it isn't a patch on the original. If people relate to it better because someone they love is singing it, then I'm happy because the more exposure that brilliant songs like this get, the better. I suppose I just want the credit for writing the song to go to the writer, because it doesn't feel like it is most of the time. People always talk about it like it Johnny Cash's creation and that annoys me. I know I'm being stubborn and childish but it's something I feel strongly about so I'm sticking to my guns. Now if someone could please put my rattle back in my pram I would appreciate it
I've got another one... the Prodigy's version of Nirvana's Love Buzz. I like the original so much that listening to the Prodges version really grates. I can listen to the whole of that Prodigy album, (which is not something I can say about many albums) apart from this one track that I can't stand! If I hadn't ever heard the original then I'd probably like it but I've been listening to the original for years and years and I find the cover quite, well, insulting. Maybe I'm just getting old..
Who was the guy that re-did Wonderwall and made it a lil bit "pop-ier"? I remember it was up against the spice girls at xmas...
Mike Flowers Pops. Which was a hilarious cover. Video Killed The Radio Star has been covered by PUSA and Ben Folds Five, and probably someone else. I personally love the PUSA version.
Evanescence's cover of Heart Shaped box was pretty damn good too. I love the original, but Amy Lee just added to the song. Gave me goose bumps.
