    Yay for common sense :thumb:

Personally though I dislike Sony and am supporting the boys from the Toshiba camp as all the Toshiba products I have ever purchased have been of far superior quality for less money ;)

Now that's a step in the right direction. Perhaps companies are waking up to the fact that the jump to HD is going to be a very expensive and large jump.

im not a huge fan of Sony, but i can think of companys i dislike more...however i am a fan of blu ray, which as far as i can tell has alot more storage than an HD DVD.

however, one of my uni friends had to give a presentation on HD DVD vs Blu Ray and the mian disadvantage with blue ray seems to be that it is for prelicensed content only. in other words: No Blu Ray Burners :waah:

You've said this before (http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?p=1189656#post1189656) and I put you straight. You were wrong then, and you're wrong now. I don't know where your friend got his 'information', but he really needs to check his sources. As I said before:

What about the HDMI lines? I have a 34" HDTV with HDMI inputs but of course it isn't a HDCP display. When my old TV bit the dust I went ahead and got this one in anticipation of HD movies (expecting it last year too!) and was pissed beyond pissed when this whole HDCP stuff came out. So anyway what about it.... HDMI going to be hamstringed?

Say good bye to HD DVD, this is the power Sony wields by owning 2 of hollywoods biggest studios (MGM and Sony Pictures). With an infinite catalogue of Sony exclusive films to release for BluRay Sony has the power to set precedents in distribution method this is once again why Toshiba is gonna loose the war. But then again if Sony didn't have any competition on the HD wars then we woudn't be benefiting from this act of generosity; showing again how healthy corporate competition can lead to consumer benefits.

I still dont like all the copy protection but this is a step in the right direction.

How big would a 2 hour HD file be, too big to pirate, too big to store. They are overreacting with the copy protection, I understand that in the future drives will be cheaper and broadband will be faster but by then there will probably be a new format.

Ummm..I hope you know HD DVD has less storage capacity than BluRay it's already been proven at E3 all the disks are already printed even the players are ready, maybe you have some old information and another thing Toshiba is backing HD DVD not Microsoft MS is just daisy chaining Toshiba to see which company will win out they've done nothing to really support HD DVD not even include one in their Xbox. The real battle lies between Toshiba and Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung and all those supporters can change ball park at any given moment. The moment a supporters feels that they backed the wrong team they'll jump ship this includes MS, Apple and pretty much all those guys.

    25 words
    3 acronyms
    1 meaningless model number

And they say geeks can't communicate clearly.

Anyway, good for Sony. I think that they are setting a good precedent which will be hard to go agains in the future.

You forgot to add - no punctuation (unless you consider a misplaced dollar sign to be punctuation)

hehe I'm sure that is what someone said just before the DVD movies came out :duh:

I can guarantee you that there will be peeps that will rip the HD movies. The real question is whether it makes any sense while there are still DVD movies at least if you intend to compress it. Basically until HD media and burners are cheap enough it will probably not be a problem.

    Bluray sucks!
It's really annoying how people don't look beyond the capacity of the medium. Besides, HD-DVD has been upgraded and can now hold up to 45Gb of data! There isn't much difference between 45Gb and 54Gb, considering they're both more than big enough for any reasonable length of HD content.
Not only that, but in other areas of the specifications, HD-DVD beats Bluray with iHD, where Sony's challenger of that feature just doesn't compare; Bluray's version of MMG will obviously be more restrictive since it is Sony getting involved and a few other things such as the fact that the native codec support of HD-DVDs are MPEG4 H.264 and AVC-1, whereas with Bluray it's MPEG2!
