and it will also be the cheapest, which really begs the question who will buy a standalone Blu-ray player?

Seems a bit strange, assuming Sangsumg hit their launch date, that Sony can't get a player for their own format out first unless it's a tactical delay to try and boost PS3 sales. Even if that's the case I can't see the sense as the only way to turn a profit on the PS3 is by selling software, something I can't see happening to a great enough extent if people are buying it solely for the cheap Blu-Ray player.

isn't that scheduled for like November? and isn't it still supposed to cost at least $600? Yah yah, standalone blue ray player is supposed to start around $1000...but if they came out this month like they were supposed to, one would hope the price would drop a few hundred by November. All I see is Sony shooting themselves in the foot with their repeated delays on all of their new technology. BluRay should have beaten HDDVD easily, PS3 (at least based on the potential the Cell processor should have) should have beaten xbox360...but sony just makes their products late, more expensive, and flawed and the consumers are left with no clear choice.

    Just read on gizmodo:

    http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/home...ys-bdp1000-bluray-player-yet-again-180415.php

--Samsung is delayed until September now too. Are they gonna push the movie release date back too, or will we end up with a bunch of high priced disks and nothing to play them on?

Worse yet...with no competition for the next 3-4 months, HD-DVD probably won't even start to come down in price or bother fixing all their bugs...and come September we'll have two overpriced, buggy formats to "choose" from. And what ever happened to all those "hybrid" HD-DVD + Blu-Ray players we heard about a few months back -- those probably won't appear until Sept. 07 or so.

phooey on both these new formats!

***EDIT*** Gizmodo has updated their page, and it now sounds like Samsung is on track for next week. And according to another Gizmodo post, whether or not Samsung ships the player, sony will be releasing 7 movies on BluRay on June 20.
