I managed to get my hands on a Net MD drive off of a Sony Laptop. This thing is basically hot-swappable and can be interchanged on the Sony Vaio with a floppy drive or sub-woofer. I know that this Net MD drive works via USB but has a different standardised head. I would like to know if anyone could give me some help with connecting this to a standard USB connection. I have decent soldering skills and am not afraid to hack this up. If anyone could give me some insight that would be great. Cheers Edit- heres a pic, its the one on the left
there are only 4 connections inside a USB cable-- they should be standardised colour -- you might just be able to solder the cables together-- worked on my xbox at least
Hamish, I got the idea from http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/mdsnt1/index.htm That picture isnt mine, I found it on the net and had to use that due to lack of digicam (student ).... I have this cus my mate has a Sony Vaio and has never used this drive cus he has mp3 player........
sounds like a really good idea. i've always wanted to do this but never found a MD drive like that. those NetMD decks looks really good, would fancy one of them. my MD old trusty MD player/recorder packed up the other day, by packed up i mean my girlfriend messed with it and then it ceased to work lol i checked the sony website but those MD laptop drives dont seem to be available as accessories
if you type PCGA-MDN1 (product code) you should be able to find them available for sale from Sony. I think they only work with a few Vaio laptops, and in my case a pc hopefully with a mod
christ I just found this.... why are we so far behind in technology??!?!? http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akiba/hotline/20030405/etc_netmd.html http://www.t-station.net/products/kenwood_dm1net.html
Sadly yes The Japanese can find MDLP NetMD drives in surplus stores now and we've yet to even have their existance announced to us I've seen pictures of those drives for sale for the equivalent of about £15 in Japan
yeah Japan are selling Kenwood and Sony drives for about £40 that fit internally in a CD-ROM drive bay (cant remember the inch size)... im off to ebay.co.jp
If you get any further with this pls say, coz i got a beutifull sony portable sony md PLAYER, and have never had a recorder so have to get mates to record them for me. If only i had a 5+1/2" md recorder!! lush!
i could never understand why MD drives didnt make it into the 3 1/2" bays and go on to replace some of the uses of a floppy drive. 160MB capacity (originally, dunno if its changed) re-writeable small, smaller than a floppy I saw a prototype video camera which had a detachable wireless 3" touchscreen for controling the camera and viewing whats being recorded when your not next to it, and it ran on high capacity MDs as well as normal ones i think. very clever. Wanted them to make it, but the Md didnt take off as expected didnt see anything more of it the reorders must be small enough to fit in a 3 1/2" bay, MD players/recorders are only just bigger then the discs themselves.
minidisc never made it properly in europe & america (me cruses & mutters at the small amount of MD head units avalable) but in japan they are really & i mena really sucessful so more kit has been made for over there only
Minidisc is really popular around where I live (Aberdeen). Nearly everyone I know has one. I have one of those MDLP Net MD's. It r0x0rz. The default software that comes with it (OpenMG) doesn't, however. But, using Nero and Sony's own Simpleburn software you can get round it and have a much easier to use/less restrictive way of doing thngs... Using the USB2 connection, I can have 4 full length albums on one MD in under 20 minutes
