Hardly suprising, seeing Sony is one of the companies behind Blu-Ray... This from elReg:

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will ship with a Blu-ray optical drive.

At this stage, it's not clear whether the console will feature a read-only unit or allow users to record video onto the blue-laser medium too. It's certainly tempting to view the PS3 as more of a successor to the poorly received PSX than the PS2 per se.

Sony best pray that Blu-Ray wins the format battle. Lets see I think they are 1 and 1 with Beta and CD. Not good odds.

I hope they put in another drive for backward compatability! It would be a pain in the ass if I couldn't play normal DVDs and CDs

boycott them if they dont; its silly bringing in all these new standards but not supporting the old. too many people own dvd/cds to expect them to pay again for the new version...

You realise to effieciently boycott the PS3 in the UK you would have to get the Townie nation to join the boycott. You would have to be hopped up on crack to attempt it :sigh:

    You're forgetting:
S/P DIF (Sony/Philips Digital Input Format) - Won
Minidisk - Lost (But still fighting.)
memory stick - Lost (But they don't know it yet)

and all the other new standards sony tried to push on everyone that I can't remember right now.

blu-ray drives will be backwards compatible. (they will be able to play CDs and DVDs)

I use a minidisc player... and unlike my dad's MP3 player I've yet to have a single issue with all of the copy protection crap. His legal download service (musicmatch?) won't even allow him to put the files on his player, that one pissed him off. Now he has to burn the files to CD and re-rip them with different software to MP3. /me laughs

I still say we should be moving towards some sort of storage without moving parts. Yeah bluray may offer much more storage for its size but it'll still be speed-limited for reading and burning and whatnot by the max rotational speed of a disk.

Unless say your playstation died. You ps2 is on its last leg the bam the new systems plays them both. Well im conservative I don't wan't something that doesn't Multi Function. It also plays DVD's. (i'll take a dozen)

Basically this is great for me. Its smart for companies for the most part. If they backwards compatible then newer games can take up all there time instead of re-releases of past games. I mean I may be able to play Final Fantasy XIV but that doesn't mean I won't want to play 8 or 9. :D

/edit: GT2 is still a damn fun game as compared to GT3A. :D

i don't like multi-function.i like things to do one thing and do it well.i don't expect to be able to jump into my TV and use as a mode of transport.i like my TV because it does its job well.i have a car for trips,a TV for watchin(top gear mostly)

    MikeTitan<i don't have a PS2 yet but on the 3rd of December i will:D

if uve got ps1/ps2 games then surely u have the console to go with them.... i don't think backward compatibility is a bad thing, its just not important.

as far as playing dvd's and cd's go.... the ps2 has the worst dvd decoder ive ever heard, cd's are even worse

You know, one of the keys to the N64 (remember that its competitors were the Dreamcast and the PS1) was that the cartridge was something like 16 million times faster... No load times.
Unfortunately, however, CDs are much cheaper to make (odd that they still sell at similar prices... you figure that one out)
