Hey, i have a Sony Vaio PCG-FR315B and its many years old and is a piece of crap. Its so slow and is really outdated and isnt worth doing anything on. I was just wondering what to do with it now that i dont want it. I dont believe anyone on ebay would want it and you cant really use any of the components right? any ideas or is it just worth the bin now? hope not because it cost over 1k
Does it work? Specs aren't terrible, digital pictureframe? Torrent box? Donation if you really don't want it, someone else always does.
I don't think it's crap at all. I don't even think a PC with 128MB RAM and a 400MHz CPU is crap at all actually. edit: OMG it has a 2.6GHz CPU, and you think that's crap?
yer it all still works just very slow. Do any of you have any ideas on why it does? I cant even play rubbish internet games without it lagging and itunes takes takes about 7 minutes to load. If there was anything i could do to much it faster i would because then i could have a my custom build and a laptop
Hmmm, I think I used to have a slightly better version of that laptop - and it really was horribly slow. Best I can suggest is some more RAM and loading tiny XP onto it. But of course you should only use tiny XP if you have a spare XP license
I only have the XP that came with the laptop i havent got a XP disc or anything so i dont think that would be possible. Can i still reinstall windows even though i havent got a install disc?
I think because you already have a license for XP then you can just download a copy of XP and use that. But don't quote me on that because I'm not certain.
Anyone got any ideas on how to make my laptop faster? I made a video just to show how slow it is Youtube Here are the specs for the laptop aswell: Intel Celeron 2.60 Gigahertz Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 40 Gigabytes of Hard Disk Storage 256 Megabytes Fast DDR RAM ATI Radeon 3D IGP Graphics 15" XGA TFT Display 10/100 Network Card 56k V.90 Modem DVD CD/RW Combo Drive
Like said above: Re-install Windows Get more RAM And replace the resource hungry apps you have (itunes, adobe PDF reader) with lighter alternatives.
I know Itunes is big but i need it for my ipod touch so have to keep that. As for installing windows i havent a clue how to do that and i havent got a install disc so didnt think it was possible. Any ideas on how i would do it?
Winamp syncs well with ipods. So no need to keep itunes. You need to get a windows disc from somewhere, or you can get something like tiny XP from here. Burn the img to a disc using nero if you have it, or imgburn (google, I can't be bothered to link). Stick it in the system and follow the instructions, or find some online if your not 100% sure.
Just had a look at the link and you have to download from pirate bay. I thought the people who made it got sent to court and jailed with a massive fine. Dont fancy getting it from there tbh. Do you think i can sell it on ebay and if so how much you think i could get?
Ah I didn't realise the link was the pirate bay, I am not sure its illegal to download just the disc as long as you have the licence. But it may be in your case as its the oem licence. I really don't know. I tell you what, give something like ubuntu a chance. You should find it runs nicely on that hardware, the built in media player will sync with an ipod (I think), it is free so no worries about that. And the upside is that you get to learn a little about linux. Link And if that still isn't nippy enough for you then a user friendly light distro would be xubuntu. There are other distrobutions which may run better such as damn small or arch. But xubuntu is very easy to use.
have you tryed turning off most of the start up programs? add more ram as mentioned. does a hell of a lot of diffrence just another 256mb ram upgrade is enough i did it to my old sony and it runs a lot faster. also download ccleaner that should help getting rid off some junk. also do some defraging and increase the virtual memory. and try to install a new os linux would be good as that is free and dosent draw as much power from your laptop as xp.
I've not heard of Microsoft taking any action against anyone downloading OS's, especially when the area is grey such as in your case. Just saying, totally unrelated to the topic, and in no way am I condoning downloading TinyXP *cough*
