Soul Calibur IV has landed and once again we have a chance to throw ourselves in the land of kung-fu kicks and bouncy...physics. Is the force strong with Soul Calibur IV though? Has the genre still got the same panache and flair? There's only one way to find out...

So far, I've found I'm deeply ambivalent about Soul Caliber IV. The graphics are excellent, no argument there. The characters play the same as they used to which made it quick to pick up again after a long break from the series. I just can't seem to get the 'Wow' factor going as much as it should do.

My only real complaint so far is that Darth Vader is slow and... well, not to put too fine a point on it, crap. And the Apprentice is hideously overpowered from the few fights I've had with him as an opponent. :(

I've had trouble being beaten when playing as Yoshimitsu - Is it just me or is he drastically overpowered?

Even against the Apprentice in Arcade he's pretty spot on.

Also, Ivy is still as tappable as pixels can be >.>

Each time you kept using the word 'best', I read it as 'breast'.

I can't blame you. Shura's are insane, and the bouncing is.. Unique.

I'm firmly(!) convinced that the only use of Havok in the whole game is for modelling the breast movements. There's certainly no evidence of physics anywhere else.

All three Star Wars characters feel out of place - they just jar with the rest of the game, and it's obvious that they're there as a gimmick. As Joe said in his part of the review, they're not even that enjoyably to play: Vader's slow, Yoda's short and the Apprentice is too powerful. And why can't the light sabres cut through the swords?

Life slowly replenishes when you arent using a character, so when one is getting low, change it out for a healthy one
You dont have to go all the way to the top to start descending, only to floor 20

These are based on the 360 version, might be different for the ps3 i suppose, cant imagine it would be though

Edit: personally i love the game, it a lot of fun kicking the gf's ass on it ;)

I think my ex-roommate would like this game. He had a bit (read, a disturbing amount) of an anime porn addiction...

why isn't there a PS3 review of the game ? You could at least include Darth Vader gameplay which is one of the most amazing characters I've ever seen in a fighting game.

    shame shame

The review looks at both the PS3 and 360 versions of the game. Darth Vader gameplay is mentioned on page 3.

Both versions were reviewed - I reviewed the PS3 version, Joe reviewed the Xbox version. Darth Vader was mentioned, but mainly in passing as I felt that that the Star Wars characters were tacky add-ons which didn't really enhance the game.

As I said above, all three of the SW characters are flawed in some way, and they don't really bring anything to the game - it's just a pointless marketing gimmick meant to generate interest for Force Unleashed.

I disagree. I've been playing with Darth Vader for a few days, when you really get into his combos and his use of the Force with his attacks he is a really interesting character. The Apprentice feels a little too samey but Vader has a totally different feel. I wouldn't call him slow, to me, he feels more on par with Mitsurigi's stats when it comes to speed and power, not too fast, not too slow. For example one of my favorite combo's with Vader is to user Force Grip (which causes you to fall to the ground afterward) then follow up with his Force Power that lifts a player from the ground which leads into his stabbing the light saber through you. Not to mention when it comes to exceptionally fast characters (like Apprentice) I used Vader's counter move to make short work of him. His Force push is powerful, but slow but it's usable in some combo's and that is where it really shines.

I thought Vader was very well balanced honestly, I don't see him being a gimmick at all, neither Yoda. Perhaps The Apprentice yeah they want folks to buy The Force Unleashed. Adding Star Wars characters wasn't anymore gimmicky than mashing Marvel and Capcom characters together, or Every Nintendo IP + Metal Geal Solid in a game. Vader's Storymode also atleast seemed to fit, along with the lines he uses before and after combat (Sensing the Darkside in Nightmare for example).
