Hi Guys I've always had this problem and figured it was just part of windows. However, the computers at college do not do it. I cannot use other programs that use the sound card when one is already using it. e.g I cannot hear cubase when I have a media player open. which ever was open first takes priority. I've just got a flashy midi controller (m-audio oxygen 88) and would like to be able to play along with winamp. I have my sounds in Kontakt. Whenever I look at the ASIO driver it just has a cross through that output. I would like to use it for more than one app. I've unticked the box in control panel - sound - let applications take exclusive control - but it hasn't worked.
It's probably to do with using ASIO - I was under the impression that this (giving exclusive control to a certain application) was one of its central features; since this is how the windows mixer is bypassed. If you're not too concerned about latency, it might be possible to use the standard windows driver, rather than ASIO?
There is an easy solution to this. if you're using Cubase to generate the sounds, why not just drop the mp3 files you want to play along to into a track within cubase rather than using winamp?
Im fairly sure its because of the ASIO driver, is exclusive to maintain low latency. That being said, in my studio at home, I can do whatever I want all the time. But I have a fairly expensive sound card in there, so it could be a sound card thing also. I agree with landy, just drop the files into your arrange window and play along with them that way, also means it would always be in sync with your sequencer.
I think the sound card thing might be more on the money as the ones at college have decent souncards also and they are fine with asio.
So do you think if I get this my problem will be solved? http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/m-audio-delta-1010lt-digital-recording-interface--173
Delta 10/10's are great. All the pc's when i was at college had them, and a few at uni had them. I have never seen this version before though, all the ones we had had a big break out box, but im guessing the sound card is identical this just doesnt have the break out board.
Isn't there an option somewhere within Cubase or the AISO setup to allow other applications to use the audio devices whilst cubase is running? Maybe exclusivity or something?
There is one to release the sound driver when cubase is minimized but considering I want to be able to play along to the tracks I would need both to be outputting sound not either one.
If that is the case I would just import the track into cubase, I can't see why this would affect loading times.
it doesn't affect loading times, per se, just cubase takes a while to boot already. Call me fussy but my computer is brilliant in every other respect and I would just like to be able to have more than one audio stream at the same time.
Call me silly but ~£140 is a bit OTT for what you want. dropping Mp3 into cubase should be near instantaneous. M-Audio Fasttrack (usb) or Audiophile 2496 should do the job fine. Perhaps even a middle of the range Asus Zonar. Or maybe one of the ESI range
well not really, i've been meaning to expand my I/O lately as my mixer just wont cut it (I study music perf at the moment but going on to music production at Uni so that sort of card is ideal). Believe me I have looked around and that looked like the best fit for what I want now and what I might want in the future.
My apologies, opinions can only be offered on the available information, which that wasn't part of. So you've already made your mind up! Got one right now. It's not the best ever, I'm eyeing up the ESI MAYA as a replacement, but it's still a massive improvement over onboard sound wrt latency & the existence of ASIO drivers.
No need to apologize mate, as you said I didn't mention that somewhat vital information regarding my choice. Thanks for you info anyway.
