i was moddin my case before, adding a blowhole above the pci/agp cards. obviously everything was removed from my pc. when i put it all back together windows crashed when it does its intro sound thing. the soundcard also made a slight pop sound, when rebooting into safe mode all went well, so booted again normally, this time windows loaded fully, but when tryin2play an audio cd crashed the same way as before. so, restart in safe mode, uninstall drivers, physically removed soundcard, booted to windows again, all worked fine, refitted card, then reinstalled drivers. so far all seems well, playin cds/games fine. had the card about 2 years now, playin games n music (my pc is used as my cd player) non stop for most of that time. what i want to know is this: is the soundcard about to implode (im thinkin this coz of the "pop" sound it gave out, it also gave a kind of high pitched whiney noise) or was it simply just a driver issue (thinkin this, coz it seems2b workin fine again now). well, if its the card thats buggered i s'pose im gona have2get another, so what do u recomend?? im thinkin either: sb 4.1 digital sb live player 5.1 hercules muse lt 4.1 hercules muse gamesurround 5.1 DVD (any others u recomend?) got about £30 to spend, will b used mostly for music and gaming, dvds when i get a dvd drive. well, please somebody help!
ok, thnx. ive decided its between the sb live 5.1 and the hercules gamesurround 5.1, so can anyone recomend these?? which one is best?
I agree, grab for that credit card, POST HASTE yeah, tis a good sound card does anyone know the name of those new VIA sound cards that are supposed to be the bees knees ?
would that b one of these: http://www.via.com.tw/en/multimedia/envy24.jsp or these: http://www.via.com.tw/en/multimedia/envy24ht.jsp ?? well, everyone has said the sb live so far, so it looks like that is what i shall get
Just be wary if you have a VIA chipset/Athlon based system, you're in for a whole world of **** with weird driver issues and general incompatibilities. You'll be forced to figure out which slot the card can reside in without annoying crackling/popping/etc, and deal with various other nuances such as the above. Excellent hardware for a consumer soundcard though, it's just the drivers that suck. Don't plan on running SMP using creative's drivers either, you'll have nothing but bad luck.
Heard good things about the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. FYI - The Herc Game Theatre XP uses the C-Media chip IIRC. Not sure about the other Herc cards tho'.
Another vote for the Turlte Beach Santa Cruz or Videologic Sonic Fury as us in blighty like to call it I had problems with my Soundblaster Live 5.1 card and a VIA chipset, and every fix i tried still didn't quite sort it, so I went for the Sonic Fury and haven't looked back...
AKA Videologic SonicFury in the UK. Great card. Make sure you get the 4142 drivers if you run XP though. From the Winamp Forums: Why NOT to buy anything from Creative.

how much are these?? i can probs spend upto about £40 (max), was told these are probs best for listening to music on (which is what it will be used most for). most of the stuff i saw there appeard to be for the audigy, not the live card. (does that make a big dif??) hmm, seems like im still gona get the sb live, but if i can get it cheap enough the sonicfury
The Turtle Beach Santa Cruz makes a good card to buy instead of the SBLive IMO. I've owned both/had both in my gaming PC, and prefered the SC to the SBLive. Just far less hassel, and about the same features/etc.
I've owned a Santa Cruz/Fury too; great card and terrific sound. Hopefully you can find one for cheap.
On reason to buy a Audigy: MP3 playback trough ASIO at 24bit or just 24bit It makes other cards in the price range sound ****e.
any reasons for this?? does it sound especially nice,is the driver support for these any good... im debating of getting a new sound card and using my old Sblive Platnium 5.1 jobbie in my 2nd pc to be... for good sound quality music wise would everyone go for the audigy or the videologic?? anybody read any good reviews on sond cards??
