    Herro,

My house was renovated recently, i wanted my room soundproofed as I wanted to put a surround sound system in the room, but instead sound leakage from the room is even worse!
I think the main culprit is the bedroom door, there is now a huge gap between the bottom and floor.

Does anyone know of any sound proofing solutions for the door gap? Or of any sound proofing solutions that would help?

    Thanks

What kind of door do you have? if its not a solid wood one (and I mean some good hard wood not a flimsy pine door) get a fire door fitted. They weigh a ton and if you get it done by someone skilled you won't have the gap at the bottom (and there are proper little seals that should be fitted to fire doors if there to code).

good to see first two replies were about as useful as an empty bag of crisps

yes, but not even sure if builders properly soundproofed the walls either, only part which seems properly done is the floor.

it's the crappy wooden type of door

How did he (attempt to) soundproof? Sound like a very shoddy job if their's a gap under the door.

A cheapish partial solution is heavy curtains draped all around the walls or at least over the door.

That's the problem, I dont think the idiots considered the door at all.

I found this, which seems pretty good, although it might make the door look stupid with a mat on one side:

Quilts, mattresses and other soft upholstery makes for good soundproofing. Pillow forts work well as a sound booth.

A friend of mine turned his room into a makeshift recording studio by putting metal grommets into the corners of his quilts/blankets and then hooking them onto the wall.

You'd be surprised how effective mrlongbeards suggestion would be; in terms of cost vs effect, it's definitely better than the product you linked too, and assuming the only real problem is the bottom of the door, it's probably surprisingly close in absolute values too!

A cheaper DIY approach to all the bells and whistles it provides would be; sheets of neoprene and some spray-mount for the door, a roll of draft strip for the jambs, and a pink dog draft excluder. Get a bit of 6mm ply sheet cut to size at your local B&Q (an un-included extra pretty-much required by the kit too) and your done.

When I helped a friend do their home studio, we took a simple hollowcore door and filled it with expanding foam, put rubber seals around the door frame and a good sweep on the bottom. Works quite well for low budget diy approach. Later on they added some of that eggcrate panel onto it as well.

That egg stuff doesn't sound proof it just diffuses the sound.

Awwwwww, lost ones sense of humour have we :duh:
OK brass tacks down to the serious business.

Is your builder known for soundproofing rooms or just a builder, I guessing the latter...

What engineering standard did you specify for soundproofing, or did you just ask for a soundproofed room?....

You signed off the work and paid the builder with a chuffing gap under the door!!!!!!!! :jawdrop:

Did you get the floor & ceiling soundproofed, most noise will come through these rather than the walls...

    Right solutions.

Walls, soundstop, or sound absorbing tiles, or fit plasterboard walls with a good inch gap between it and the existing walls make sure there is no contact with the existing walls.

Ceiling, Fit lower false ceiling and fill void with suitable material, not cheap heat insulation

Floor, Lift boards and fill void with suitable material, refit boards, lay heavy shag carpet.

Door, Burn current door, don't bother with fire door as the intumescent strips are only supposed to expand under fire conditions, just get a heavy solid door which has been fitted properly, hang heavy rug on inside surface, rubber seals will also help.
