    At least you have narrowed down the brands! Right, depending on the board you choose, it is generally the chipset that has the most to do with performance. However, each brand incorporates different features i.e Bios, overclocking etc. Therefore, decide what you want on the board and look at the alternatives from those two brands depending on your CPU choice. They both do excellent boards for both AMD and P4, you need to state which before we can recommend any.

    A long time in computing terms is very different to normal...........as long as the machine continues to do want you want it to then theoretically it can last ages, but in technological terms you could be changing a board every few months if you want to keep ahead!

    Probably not many things are going to last very long right now, because we are just now starting to go through the transition phase between ata and serial ata. also, they still haven't decided what socket they are going to make the new clawhammer AMDs (if that's what you're looking at). But then again, in the computer world, its out of date as soon as it produced. Find what you like and enjoy.

    Soyo = Sexeh Black
    MSI = Beautiful Red

    hmmm... the asethitic descisions are endless!

    My advice would be to find out wot features u want, then trail around reading reviews of the brands boards with those features to find the best.

    Don't limit your self to MSI and Soyo tho, Epox and Abit are also very good.

    (and so are many others :p)

    It can be daunting if your unsure but read reviews is all i can recommend.

    Ug :)

    banished: nope

    couzo: Stating you want an Athlon XP is a bit vague mate, need to go into more detail than that to help u!

    How many DIMM slots are you after?
    What Type Of ram?
    Raid?
    Do you intend to overclock?

    Answers to questions like that will help us to help u! And Clawhammers will probably be out end 2002 / beginning 2003!

    Ug :)

    OK, for around £130 the AMD boards you should be looking at are based on the Via KT series chipsets:

    MSI KT3 Ultra - ARU RAID
    Soyo K7V Dragon+ (Uses the KT266a chipset, the Dragon Ultra which uses the KT333 is more expensive)

    You wouldn't Need RAID, but it may be beneficial to use it if you have the opportunity!

    Isaac did an excellent job of explaining raid here

    "Redundant Array of Identical (or Inexpensive) Disks.

    There are many different forms of RAID. RAID is a system of using more than one hard disk in such a way as to improve performance or data reliability.

    Common forms of RAID are:

    RAID 0: Striping. This takes chunks of data, and writes them across two or more disks at once, increasing transfer rates.

    RAID 1: Mirroring. This writes the same data to two disks, so that if one disk fails, the data is still safe.

    RAID 0+1: Both of the above, requiring a minimum of four disks.

    RAID 5: Not available in IDE, this is the "best" form of RAID. This requires a minimum of 3 disks, and the data is striped across all but one of the disks. The last disk contains parity information. Parity information is spread equally across the disks, so that if one disk fails then the data can be regenerated from the data on the others and the parity information. Thus RAID 5 has the speed advantage of RAID 0, the reliability advantage of RAID 1 without the huge disk-space wastage of RAID 1."

    I was looking at getting one of those but went for the Soyo as I have been told they have better performance. I will be using an XP2100 with it but don't know what Heatsink and fan to use with the Soyo as I have heard the processor socket is in a different place. But I will stick with the Soyo. My sister got me to build her a PC last week and I got her the MSI one and it is good and comes with loads of stuff like 4x USB ports 4x USB 1.1 ports and a blue tooth thing!!!! Never seen one before but after some research the Soyo are better performers!! Right thats my waffle out the way mmmmmmmmmmm waffles!!

    Has anyone seen word of the release of the InnoVision's (Inno3d graphics cards etc company) new InnoBD-4200D (for AMD) and BD-7200D (for pents)? they're supposed to be just as good as the soyos, but a a cheaper price.
