After many years of reliable service, the budget lawn mower I got free with my house is basically dead and has been taken to the skip. As a result, I'll need a replacement before the gardening season starts. Here are the requirements: Corded electric: a battery powered thing won't have the power or runtime for when I need to do the larger plot of land opposite my house, and I don't want the increased maintenance an internal combustion version. A section of my plot has a lot of rocks and stones in, so I want something that can handle being mistreated. Here's the one currently catching my eye: Bosch AdvancedRotak 650 RRP is £300, but you can find it for ~£260. However, I'm happy to spend a decent amount more if it means an increase in durability and grass murdering potential. Let me know if you have any recommendations. I'm probably going to buy the mower mid March.
I’ve got a corded flymo in the shed if you are near (Bristol area postcode) been wanting to Facebook marketplace it for £20 or something. We swapped to a battery one cos we have a tiny garden now and running power cord jus meant grass got blown inside and was a nightmare with indoor cats anyway. By all means still get a fancy one! But this could tide you over?
Ohh, let me have a think as I'll be that way 8th February ish. I do need something relatively industrial. Any experience with how it handles abuse?
Einhell....Mines been in the garden getting rained on etc for 3 years and it always goes.... Blade could do with a sharpen though.
What size is the plot of land? I’d posit anything that would be viable to pull a cord across could be handled easily by a large (but admittedly much pricier) battery powered mower. I’ve been using and abusing a Makita DLM533 for the last 5 years on a large lawn and only get onto the second bank of batteries when I’ve left it grow well too long. And that’s a toy compared to some of the big EGO mowers.
I mean it wasn’t an overly expensive one as I recall, like £130, and it’s a hover mower opposed to on wheels. But the old place had a fairly big garden, it was very uneven with lots of potholes and divots, and sloping unevenly away from the house itself. It kept up with twigs, small stones/gravel and weeds where they attacked the edges. It would probably do you as a starter or stopgap by the sounds of it. But you might need something a bit bigger still.
I upgraded from a corded flymo to budget battery makita mower and its so much less faff. I do only have a smallish lawn area and it would chew through 2x 3ah batteries but I've now purchased 2x 5ah and that is plenty. I suspect a upper end battery mower with large batteries would have the staying power you need. I have found that the battery mower can 'stall' if the grass is very long or the blade bottoms out but again something with more grunt will probably be fine.
I ditched my Flymo for a "Lawnmaster OcuMow" Just drop it on a lawn and it goes around like dumb robo vacuums of old (before smarter Lidar nav ones). Instead of 45min of lawn mowing every 2 weeks, I now use the time to trim the bushes (not a euphemism) whole garden is in nicer shape without spending more time on it. I think a newer robot mower that systematically mows and comes back to recharge can comfortably cover quite a large area.
Whelp, I've taken the plunge and gone for the larger version, the Bosch AdvancedRotak 750. I looked at a few more reviews, and it looks to be worth the price: I ended up paying £246, RRP is £300. I'll get back with my thoughts after I've started using it when things start growing again...
We had a Bosch rotak mower for 15 years - flawless performance. It's still going, we just don't have lawn that we need to mow anymore, so we gave it away.
I've got a basic Bosch Rotak 32R Electric Rotary Lawnmower that I picked up on an Amazon black Friday deal a few years ago. Does a reasonable job with our average sized lawn.
I think that was the model of the one I inherited with the house. Great little mower. Truth be told, I probably should've been more sensible and just bought a straight replacement. But new toy...
