    Hey guys,

My best friend's mum is after a new tablet for Christmas, and they asked for some help.

She is an Android user and would like to stay that way.

Their budget is 300 quid, and does not need heaps of storage, though the option to expand would be welcome.

    What would you suggest?

    Thank you!

What size tablet? Unless something unusually large is needed, my stock recommendation of the Nvidia Shield Tablet remains.

Good luck finding these now. I'd love to buy another one to replace mine since the battery has tanked but they are nowhere to be found.

The Huawei MediaPad M5 might be the best bet. You can get it in 8 and 10 inch versions.

iPad [and i say this as a noted loather of iStuff].

Android tablets are pretty much universally terrible, but if it absolutely has to be droid - Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Huawei Mediapad are the best least terrible options iirc.

I was thinking along the lines of a Samsung unit as well.

It has to be Android, sadly. Can’t give her an iPad. That’ll be another year of training on how to use the bloody thing.

Perhaps a bit of a long shot... but have you considered a phone with a bigger screen?

Thanks to the war on bezels even 6" phones are very compact now and you have practically infinite choice unlike with android tablets where everyone ran away to make windows ones instead.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 or 4 plus might be worth a look when it comes out. The other option is a chrome book with a 180 degree hinged keyboard and tablet mode.

Bought a Fire HD 8 a couple days ago and so far seems to do a decent job considering the price. The main downside is limited app selection as it's all through Amazons app store, but you can sideload.

No side loading is going to be the better plan considering she’s tech illiterate to begin with. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I’m going to pass them along.

I picked up a Samsung Tab A for the lassie with sim card and microSD slots.

Been more than good enough for her apps and internet. Sim card is handy for travel.

You can pick them up cheaper without a sim card slot mind.

I have a Tab A (2016) and would recommend. Decent screen with incredible battery life.

If I use it only for reading magazines I get over 20 hours battery life.

Have to agree, battery life seems pretty decent on ours too.

I bought all my kids a Fire HD 7 or 8 (can't remember which it is now and I can't see one lying around to check) a year back and I have to say I'm impressed. Good battery, fast and durable and only paid £40 each. I have loaded up google onto them so they work as a normal tablet now.
