im currently thinking about setting up a low bandwidth ftp server using guildftp running on a win 98 machine max upload 128k max download 512k will a 486 dx 100 with scsi hdds be able to keep up with this?? ie send and recieve at the max rates thanx for ne answers pies
on win98...nope...a p 133 might be pushin it also...i tried runnin a firewall on the same connection speed on a 133 and i got lag....
im not too worried about a high ping (latency or lag) but i thought u could get a good average transfer rateeven with a not so gr8 ping
well lets just say on 512 download, when i was runnin my dual 500 celery server on win2k i got 80k steady download....so then i went to smoothwall and run it on a p1 133mhz with 96mb of ram and id only get about 40k a sec....now im runnin it on a celery 400 and i get proper download speeds again... i hope this kinda helps...
try a p2 200mmx or somethin if u got the simmiliar lying about ....thats what i used before the celery 400 and it was fine...
i got a p2 266 mobo +proc kicking around downstairs and a psu n ram in my room hmmmm i got plenty on old 10 mbit network cards only problem is a hdd hmmmmmmmm have to have a look 4 my old scsi card dont know wtf thats gone
first, gotta say good choice with guildftpd.. used it for ages, love it.. anyway, i couldnt even get 98 to run stable on my dx4-100, with 64mb of memory and 1meg of onboard cache (wow that stuff was expensive in the day) however, nt workstation with any servicepack other than 6a (6a causes me to crash constantly) should do the trick.. I was using it as my ftp before, no problems at all with speed. plus then you can run guild as a nt service.. -scoob8000
i aint got a spare ide hdd but i do have a 1 gig scsi hdd in my 486 atm with a single speed scsi cd drive !!!!! FEEL THE SPEED so ill just dig out my old scsi card
