Hey guys, quick question, got a PC which has only one VGA port on it for the monitor, built into the mobo. Are there any adaptors which will allow the use of two monitors as an extended desktop?

    Cheers! x

This ought to do it, by the looks of things it's ~£100.

there must be something cheaper than that? surely you can get gpu cards with multiple output ports that do the same thing for loads cheaper??

Yeah, just the way I read the question I got the idea that you had a specific need to use the onboard.

Hit ebay for a dual head PCI card (agp if you've got it?) and you'll get one for next to nothing.

Why do you have to stick to the onboard? There must be a free slot somewhere! :p

If you get a simple cheapo cable that simply splits the vga cable... you wont get an extended display, infact both the screens would show the same image on them if the simple splitter cable works atall (ive found they only work in some situations like when both displays are the same).

As ElThomsono points out, the dual head to go, or a new gfx card would be the better and cheaper option.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=30531&vpn=100-U2-UV12-A1&manufacture=eVGA this'll use a spare USB port to replicate an additional VGA/DVI display and to 1400x1050 where this model http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=29798&vpn=100-U2-UV16-A1&manufacture=eVGA will go up to 1600 x 1200. It'll operate as a separate display, so you can have dual/identical desktops, or an extended desktop etc. The units are very small, about the size of your palm and are stackable with little magnets so you can expand to 2+ monitors if you wish, no need to buy a new GPU or invest in more expensive solutions and it works fairly well.

At my former school they used a VGA splitter cable that was simply 1->2 that was used to send the same image to both projector and monitor. It of course required the monitor and projector to be able to run at a common resolution but this didn't seem as an issue at all. I believe the res was 1280x1024 on the monitor and stayed that way when the projector was also attached to the splitter cable.

    Here you go: http://shopping.kelkoo.co.uk/ss-vga-y-splitter-cable.html
    7 and 9 quid.
