I am thinking of painting the sides of my Hightower black, but the only thing concerning me is how scratch resistant the paint will be. I have all ready sanded down the steel sides and applied clear coat to them, so I guess I'd have to sand the clear coat before starting with the black paint. But how durable will the paint be? Knowing myself, I know that I will move the computer around alot. A huge advantage with the steel sides then, is that they don't scratch. I know many of you have painted your computers, so could you please share som experiences?

duribility will have a lot to do with the paint and the preparation. A roughed surface and/or primed will improve durability. Using enamel paint or other paints designed for painting metals makes a huge difference as well.

I used automotive paint on Malibu, takes a bit of a beating with all the lan parties i go to, the only part that gets scratched is the plastic bezel :thumb:

Every time I look at my PC it's got another scratch. Just on the clearcoat, and impossible to buff it all back out. Beats me what the problem is.

But at least it looks pretty :p

if you take your time, sand, prime, paint (automative paint), clear (automative clear) you should end up with something looking great and very durable ;) I've put 5 thin paint coats and 4 thin clear coats and I don,t have a single scratch.. even after moving the case in a few LANs :D

the best way to make it durable is to paint a thin layer, let it cure a day or so then put another layer... it's very long but the results are amazing and you won't get disapointed by scratchs... except if you scratch the paint with a screw driver..

if you only wait an hour between each coats, the paint will be less durable... depending if you move you case to LANs etc, you can choose the way you want to paint your case :D
