Hi there, I did put this in the Gigabyte 460 owners thread but doesnt look like anybody noticed lol Ive had this card since october and the first time I really pushed it was last night when I installed Crysis. FPS is fine and everything is maxed + 2AA @ 1440x900 resolution...... My problem is that the card squeals from the first load up screens and menu till I actually get in the game ??? I thought, if the card was going to squeal, it would be during actual gameplay when card is being pushed ??? Then I remembered the Starcraft 2 issue, no frame cap on the menu and it burning out peoples GPU. As this issue was patched with Starcraft I updated Crysis to patch 1.2 but it still does it Anybody with this issue ??? or some advice, would enabling V sync help? cheers
the fan is quiet as anything...... got it from scan, should I ask in their partner forum or give them a ring tomorrow? cheers
I'm guessing it might be the chokes have a look at this http://theovalich.wordpress.com/200...w-and-how-to-fix-it-no-more-gtx280-squealing/ Or it's not getting enough power, Nvidia cards all do this. In which case it could be the PSU.
But it happens during the first splash screens and up to the main menu ??? when I'm playing it doesnt do it. Edit: psu is 2months old - antec truepower new 650
There was some one one here a few months ago had the the same prob with a 470, when it was flat out it was fine. That was the chokes. Well we can rule out the PSU then.
I also have a Truepower New 650W, just bought a GTX570 and the PSu seems to make a buzzing noise - might be a different buzz/whine comming from the GTX but really hard to tell. Keep an ear on your PSU and see if it's coming from that? Not sure how to fix it though, considering just replacing the PSU. Which is annoying, as it should be powerful enough.
as far as I can tell, its the graphics card thats making the noise and its more of a squeal/screach (but not the same as not putting one of the 6 pin's in ??? when do you get the noise? the GTX 4/570's and 4/580's have coils or something that also can make a noise ??? or is that a totally different issue what else is GFX card demanding that would highlight a power issue ??? edit: and as the PSU is modular, I could try using a modular 6 pins to connect it ??? cheers guy's
what was the outcome fella? RMA? or just live with it? lol if it wont do any harm then I can put up with a 25 second squeal lol
I was looking for the thread but I can't find it. I think he tightened the chokes and sorted it. I do remember the problem being fixed though, that for sure. RMA is an option though.
I've a very very similar problem to this with my new gtx570 Actually recording a video of it to make sure its definately worth RMAing anyone know what DABs are like with their RMA's?
I've read somewhere there was a way of fixing this with glue on the offending bit. There seems to be a few of these threads lately though
Ah, nevermind, thanks for looking. Think I will have to do this because.... see below and sorry never used DABs so dont know Yeah I have seen some threads but only on 4/580's with their coils or something ??? filling them with superglue and the above link from Bulldog where they drowned the capacitors in nail varnish!! Ok so I turned V sync on...... no noise played until dead (not long) lol then quit turned v sync off and launched Crysis...... Noise came back! but not quite as loud and now I cant tell whether its the GFX card or the PSU. Im going to stick my phone in their and record it, microphone down on the psu then mic up at the gfx card The joys lol
I ruled the PSU out as soon as I realized it was on start up. If the PSU was at fault it would do it under load when the card is drawing max power. So it all points towards the GPU now.
The problem with the Starcraft 2 menu screens was because there was no frame limit, the graphics card would work as hard as it could to produce far more frames than it needed, causing the heat to rise. If it doesn't whine when v-sync is enabled then It's most likely your graphics card's components. Your spec is similar to mine with the same PSU, even with mine overclocked by 1GHz and a second graphics card (a single 9800GTX+ has similar power requirements to a 460), when I measure from the wall and take 85% efficiency into account I still use less than half the 650w my PSU is capable of, so unless it is actually faulty then your PSU isn't under any kind of strain at the moment. Having Vsync enabled will reduce the power required to process images, i'd also enable Triple Buffering if Vsync is enabled unless you are playing a game that uses more video memory than you have.
ah, right.... but I was also thinking the same about the gfx card ??? or would/ could it be the chokes/caps that resonate at certain loads and only Crysis's splash/menu screen create that load ???
