good day bit-tech people ! i was thinking about purchasing a SSD drive, to be exact OCZ Vertex Limited Edition 100GB i'd use it for windows and few games/programmes ofcourse and move the rest of my crap to my current HDD. i'm not 100% sure if its a good idea which is why i want your opinions, anything better for £300 max ? any SSD's to come out soon, etc ? thanks for reading
If you are tight on budget, and need capacity, i think 2 7200RPM HDD as RAID is a good trade off. Yes it's not AS fast, but it should be pretty damn fast, great large capacity, for a fraction of the price. That is what I plan to get in summer.. my currently single HDD is way to slow, and it bugs me.
If you want instant gratification, speed boost, but probably not much impact to actual in program performance, then an SSD is the way to go. If you are editing vids, encoding files etc, a faster CPU would be a better buy. For instance Photoshop CS4 on RAID 0 hard disks takes about 8-9 seconds to load up. With an SSD it opens in about 3. Actual use of the program, an SSD is of (almost) no benefit, unless you have one to write temp files to.
The mechanical HDD has been the limitation in getting your OS up and running and then loading your apps/games. With an SSD the OS loads marginally faster (it still pauses now and again) but once you're at your desktop, the loading times for apps and games is astonishing. The whole OS experience just feels more responsive. It's far more than a shift from 64MB to 512MB in XP, or 512MB to 2GB in Vista.
