I have just bought a kingston 120GB Solid State Drive 2.5 inch V300 SATA 3. Plugged it all in and started up, windows has found it and installed its drivers but I cant actually access the ssd at all via my computer (im using windows XP)

Im not sure if I have missed something out or I am just being stupid but this is the first time I have installed a drive :( HELP

    XP????

Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK. That will open the disk management console. It sounds to me like you need to format your SSD and assign a partition.

    See here for more info.

Oh, and stop using XP, that's just madness ;)

Remember DO NOT DEFRAG. WinXP doesn't have countermeasures to protect the SSD from Defrag being automatically ran by windows or you .
Also WinXp can't initiate a TRIM command when you delete files so upgrade to Win7 as soon as you can.

There's no such thing as a sata 1 cable...

Naturally you can have shonky cables & decent cables, but that's the only difference & it's only really when you get up to 6Gb/s that shonky ones have any real chance of making an impact d.t. a lack of shielding...

Though i've used all kind of random ones with SSDs over the last 5 1/2 years & it's made no odds whatsoever.

More likely is that there's something else that's the bottleneck with the game - so either the processor or lack of ram...

(in fact, the way you've got the machine set up atm, with the pagefile still on the HDD, then a lack of ram could very well be key since it'd still be swapping data on & off the HDD)

...or it 'could' potentially be a lag on your internet connection.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah this is a very old rig :p the motherboard is so old that abit have stopped all support for it :(

I am due to upgrade to windows 7 and I will be buying another 4gig of ram so hopefully that should sort out my issues.

Off topic but hopefully someone can help rather than me making another thread. Can you use different brands of ram? The ones I have at the moment arnt the easiest to find.

Could that be an issue?

Edit: I have just looked into it and on the windows website its telling me that it will be fine.

However I have been reading other forums and there has been loads of issues trying to install windows 7 64bit :( Something to do with the board drivers.... I have no idea which version I am on but I know ABIT has discontinued support for it.

I think Ill try if it doesn't work, I want out of XP!!

i can see no reason why Win7 wouldn't work on the board - i know, back in the day, i had it running it on a 478 board that my folks were still using at the time.

As to brands of ram, you can usually use different brands/models, but it's best to either try to get things as close as possible in spec or, for compatibility, set things up in the bios for the slowest of the speeds if there's a difference.
