I want to replace my Samsung 830 with a 1TB drive so I can take my 3TB noisy rust spinner out of my case. It will be my main boot drive and probably have a few games on it too. What's the best option at the moment, I'm currently leaning towards the Samsung 870 Evo. Is it worth the extra ~£20 over the Qvo and stuff like the Crucial MX500?
MX500 is a solid drive. TLC with DRAM. QVO is QLC, cheaper bill of material due to the newer tech allowing more data to be stored in less flash chips. Works well for mostly read operations (eg. Games drive), but suboptimal if you want to do loads of small writes (eg OS drive). I’d get the MX500 over the more expensive Samsung Evo. I think they are comparable in performance, so buy the cheapest one.
I prefer Crucial MX500, I had a 1TB 870 evo and a 500GB MX500 - except for storage capacity, I never really noticed a performance difference. Both still going. QVO like wyx087 said, good for certain use cases. Similar I guess to a Toshiba 1TB I had, great for a steam library drive, but a real life noticeable decline in performance if used as main windows drive. Get the MX500 is what I would do.
I much prefer the 1TB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS NVMe PCIe 3.0 as i replaced my other 500GB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS NVMe PCIe 3.0. I originally wanted the 2TB but couldn't get it with my new system..
I'm after a 2.5" drive. Thanks all for the responses, I'm afraid my impatience won out and I went for the Samsung last night on amazon at £100 and it was here by 9am this morning, all up and reinstalled on the 870 now, Good to know about the MX, I'll keep that in mind when I need MOAR space.
