Hey Guys, So I was just starting to plan out my Dan case build, here is the hardware that will be going in most if not all I have already. Point is not to overclock and try and keep things quiet and cool. Intel i5-6400T H170I-PLUS-D3 16GB DDR3 Crucial Ballistix 1600 M2 500GB Samsung NVMe 512GB 840 Pro SSD Noctua NH-L9i Silverstone 600 Watt SFX PSU I have left the graphics card off for now as that is going to be my first question.... I have at hand either a Nvidia 980 GTX with a stock blower style cooler or a nice mini Zotec 1050Ti. The rig will be my main gaming rig and my monitor resolution is 2048 x 1152. Though my gaming isnt really hardcore and I will be playing the following games. World of Warcraft Ark: Survival Evolved The Division While most of my rigs are in pieces at the moment (im salvaging from a few to put this rig together), I have been using the 1050Ti and to my surprise its been fine with the games above. Sure not all the eye candy is turned on and well ARK is the least optimized and again it runs ok. So that leads me to my next question. Use the 1050Ti or the 980 GTX?
I have a Silverstone 600W SFX PSU and it's not really noisy at all - certainly nowhere near as noisy as my GPU or even case fans (even though they have low noise adaptors fitted).
Tbh I have a rack to my right which houses my white box esxi, synology and a cisco wlc. I can't really hear the 600 watt psu over that. However at full pelt that 980gtx can make some noise. When it was in the n case it was much loader than when it was the enthu itx case.
Silverstone had fan noise problems with most of their SFX units, but the version 2 models are very quiet - I have a couple myself. Looking forward to the build log.
Aye, David, I think the first versions were a bit loud but they fixed the fan curves in later revisions. My 600W is v1.2 or something and it's not loud at all (or at least, when it does make noise it can't actually be heard over the GPU anyway). I guess if you were using the iGPU (as I believe jrs77 does) then it's going to be more of an issue.
I can't imagine your computer draws that much power all in: I think Silverstone have a passive 450W unit these days.
I have a Corsair SF600 and an NCASE M1. Not the same I know but similar issues. I got the higher wattage so the fan doesn't spin up so often and it doesn't but when it does I never hear it. Cables are super stiff though and the cable that connects to the SSD (not the SATA one, the bigger one) was a problem as the cable entered the connector at a right angle so I couldn't get it to fit in my case. I bought the Corsair braided cable set for it which is much better. As for heat my ASUS 1070 is not a blower and the case got very hot until I added 2 fans in the bottom to help shift some air. There is also 1 on the side and 2 92mm ones on the CPU cooler and I feel all are very much need to maintain temps at a reasonable level. The 1070 is 150w. I was thinking to get the 1080 but couldn't justify the price jump considering I will upgrade it in a year or 2 anyway and the 180 is 180w and I as trying to keep it all as low as possible to keep heat down and the PSU fan off as much as possible. I think in the Dan Case anything with a wattage similar too or less than a 1060 (120w) and you won't see any issues at all even if it is not a blower. The 980gtx is 165w and the 1050ti is 75w. Therefore, without help cooling, the 1050ti would be the better option if temps are a concern in my opinion or look for a 2nd hand 6gb 1060 GTX.
OK better late than never. I gave up on the custom cables, as lets be honest I was never going to get around to it! I also dropped the 2.5" SSD as I felt I would be fine with 512GB. First issue I faced was i needed to upgrade the Mobo bios as previously I was having some issues with getting the nvme to boot. I decided to do that while the machine was in the old case. Updated the bios and after a little fiddling I was able to see the nvme in the bios. I then decided to reinstall Windows 10, to check the nvme would boot. Grabbed a iso from Digital River, 64Gb USB 3 stick and rufus and I was off. Windows installed all fine. I then proceeded to strip down the old machine and rebuild in the new case. Here are some pics: https://imgur.com/a/3EpbC Case wasnt bad to build with at all, as despite being smaller was less of a pain then an N Case to build with. On Idle its whisper quiet. The PSU fan isnt spinning at all. I will continue to get it setup and post some temps and sound impressions under load.
Although I LOOOOOVE nvme I would drop 500 nvme space to 256 and get 1TB ssd or get more than 500 nvme, especially if you GAMING. Most games now requires a lot of space and if u using shadowplay u will be running out of space in no time.
As a little trick, you can just set your shadowplay "cache" directory to your NVMe and the storage of the video to any old spinning rust and it'll be fine.
I have a nas in the network cabinet next to me. Just map a share if / When I need the space. But I'm a little weird I tend to play one or two games at a time. Then when I get bored I uninstall and install something new.
