It's all going to come down to price. Usually with PC stuff, the smaller it is, the more expensive it is. I still don't really get what market they are aiming at. Although....... If it is powerful enough to play 'proper' PC games (and I mean, Arma 3, Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen) and can support good high resolutions then it means I might be able to plug one into my projector setup. Currently that's not possible with my current PC as it's in a different room. I could be sold on it then - as long as the price is right!
From the same article... If Kotaku get this bit right then the 'Steam Box' is going to have to be very good indeed technology wise. PC owners stump up this (and more) on a build because they can then upgrade bits at a time relatively cheaply (in that there is arguably at least some competition when it comes to components). The 'Steam Box' we were shown is such a different form factor that the components are probably going to be bespoke and hence not so cheap. This makes is look like an expensive investment. I would love a PC in my projector room, but it would need to be a good one indeed at this price. Otherwise, it's just a more powerful and more expensive console - albeit with a (probably) expensive upgrade path.
Greetings! There are several Xi3, one seems to going to be priced at 1.000, others will be priced lower. If the thing is upgradable, there may even be several models with different specs selling. Too soon to know what Valve is aiming for, although if we look at Steam Survey gaming is made on low specced machines. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey
Valve Teases Three Announcements Next Week Full story here and teaser site here. I assume its for the Steam Box, hence the bumping of the thread.
Three announcements... three... HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED! Nah, it'll probably be Steambox and a couple of upgrades to the store. HL3 being Steambox exclusive would be some epic trolling by Valve though...
Steam box, Left 4 Dead 3 and/or Portal 3. Half Life 3 not happening. In my ideal world, Valve would announce Half Life: Opposing Source, starring the green vested mute and set in the seven hour war, can but dream...
FFS. Work announce 600 redundancies to come and at the same time Value start opening up about the steam box...
No Windows licence on the Steambox will be nice. Plus SteamOS itself will be installable on any PC for free. Valve said that when they ported Source to OpenGL, they got big performance increases. That could just as well be true for other engines. I much prefer the idea of OpenGL - no more 'exclusive' features that force you to upgrade to a new version of Windows.
