Bought a Steam Deck a few days ago :D

Got two 10 hour flights (to and return) coming up in September, apparently with access plug point. Could complete 2 single player games in that time.

Also would like pick-up and play 5-15min games while bored in between stuff day-to-day.
For 5-15min quick games (using Steam Deck sleep pause function), I'm thinking to complete Stray.

Any game recommendations for games that work well on this format?
    (smaller low-res screen, controller)

What about emulation, which are must-play games from PS1/2/xbox era that never came to PC?
    (always been PC-only gamer)

    Some games I enjoy:

Wreckfest - destruction derby banger racing - works well and is fully verified on the deck
Vampire survivors - Roguelite casual shooter / dual stick game - fully verified and pick up, put down (max 30 mins for a level)
Bro force - Acrady side scroller - good fun and lots of bloody mess stupidness
Chainsaw warrior - GW back catalog card game and pretty enjoyable. Very playable but I remember something being annoying with controls but I cant remember what it was and now dont notice it.

FTL is fairly pick up and play for short sessions (though I got bored fairly quick as rogue likes aren't my schtick)
Any Worms game of your choosing
Any CIV game would no doubt work well (being turn based) but stopping after 15mins may be the challenge!
Trine is a beautiful platformer but not sure if would be easy to tell what's going on for a smaller screen.

FTL I love, but it requires some clicking, not really suitable to the portable's controller is it?
Same goes for Civ games, or any strategy games I'd thought? Even though it's a genre I love.

Not sure what the battery life situation on plane or what works on Steam OS but the following seems to work well on my handheld

Racing games (Forza, Dirt, the crew etc)
Fighiting games (Tekken, Soul calibre, Street Fighter etc.)
Strategy game -Jurassic world Evolution 2 works quite well on handheld controller, I tried Anno 1800, it sort of works but you need a good app to reprogram some of the keys to make it easier, not found a good one yet.
Platformer, Rayman Origins, Child of light, some of these like stardew vallley work well in the 4w profile and will probably net me 10hours of battery.

So right stick for mouse? I'll have to try out a strategy game, but it just doesn't feel right with controllers.
Although Halo Wars should be playable. I've yet to play those despite being a Halo fan.

Thanks for the type rundown. Got Rayman Origins on Epic.

Vampire survivors and Broforce looks great, bought, thank you. Already got Wreckfest.

Yup I can switch my controller to be mouse etc, it works to a fashion, might be better with steam deck touch pads.

Forgot Cup head side scrolling looks good on small screen.

I mean you can play pretty much anything on these things now such is the power of the APUs and proliferation of console controls as a default option, it's completely down to what you like to play really.

I'm trying to get a feel what games people play on these. They still have limitations: smallish screen, controller centric input, low grunt APU.

I absolutely suck at Cup Head, tried it out in my car.
Speaking of which, Cat Quest looks like will work well. Shame I can't sync my saved game from the car.....
Battle of Polytopia should also work well, and therefore so will tile based Civ games. I guess tile based strategy games will work well with controllers.

My knowledge ends at AAA games and most of the time I use K&M. Hence asking for controller centric games.

Also any PS1/2/3 and xbox/360 era console exclusive games worth emulating?

    streets of rage 4
    any of the shantae series
    hotwheels unleashed
    circuit superstars
sould calibur 6 works surprisingly well
    ace combat 7
    disco elysium
    signalis
    lumines (music based tetris)
    justice sucks

stuff emudeck on it, will need some fiddling but cant beat playing playing classic console games like FF7 and MGS on it.

Many triple A games are good too obviously you have to use resolution scaling for some but I've run The Last of Us, Cyberpunk, FF7 Integrade remake is good if final fantasy 7 is your thing, 100Gb though but it looks like how your mind remembers FF7 to be :D awesome.

Ah yes, flight games will also work well, as long as targets are marked, doesn't need to pixel peep for the targets. Ace Combat, SW Squadrons, HAWX, etc.

What classic console games are there that are not to be missed?
My only knowledge is N64 era group games I've played in school common room. Namely Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart.
    MGS is Metal Gear Solid?

    SNES wise:
    Secret of Mana
    Chronotrigger
Legend of Zelda, a link to the past
Super Mario World (1 and 2)
Contra 3 (was called super probotector in the UK)
    Are stand outs for me.

Difficult really a lot of the classics have often been remastered and released on PC or later PlayStation, so for me I have no desire to play the old stuff really particularly on a handheld where the emulation will likely require more power than the new versions, best to hit some best of lists on Metacritic and see if anything takes your fancy.

Some games that might play well

    Tempest 2000, TxD, Polybius.

    Wipeout Omega collection?

Super Mario Bros 3 on NES was one that stuck with me as a classic I think that as remade in Super Mario Allstars on SNES.
    R Type III
    Super Castlevania 4

Kencos mention of Bastion, reminded me of another from same developer that you could possibly play and complete on the plane if you have never played it, it is called Transistor and is awesome :cooldude:

Some top recommendations in here, will update later with some of my faves. But a few mentioned so far that stand out...

This game should come with a health warning because it's so addictive. This game was made for the Deck (and other handhelds).

On PC it's not ideal without a mouse, or spending a while binding hotkeys to different controls... Slight aside however: If you have an iPad, there is an excellent touchscreen version of FTL on iOS (doesn't look like there's an Android version). The UI has been redesigned to be touch-friendly and it's absolutely ace.

Would thoroughly recommend Disco Elysium anyway. Definitely get the "Final Cut" version because it features a lot more voice acting (I'm not even sure the original is available on Steam), and reading the on-screen text on the Deck does get a bit tedious.

Stuff wot I've played on the Deck, or would recommend as a good "Deck-friendly" game...
    • Broforce
    • Citizen Sleeper
    • Dead Pixels (I think this works, but you might need to map touchpad to mouse because stupid launcher)
    • Death Stranding (I have played this on Deck, but I prefer a big screen for this one)
    • Dicey Dungeons
    • Disco Elysium
    • Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
    • Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster (though you have to assign one of the touchpads to mouse control in order to use the stupid launcher)
    • Firewatch
    • God of War (again, I prefer a big screen for this)
    • GTA5
    • Iconoclasts
    • Metal Slug (there are a bunch of these on Steam)
    • Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
    • Sonic Generations
    • Sonic Mania
    • South Park: The Stick of Truth/The Fractured But Whole
    • Stray
    • They Bleed Pixels
    • VVVVVV
    • The Witcher 3
    • XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within (defaults to mouse control, so need to map touchpads to mouse in order to switch to controller input)

Fair warning for these: these are perfect Steam Deck fodder but they are highly addictive, and you may lose hours/days weeks/months of your life to them!
    • Rogue Legacy (there is also a sequel, but I have not played that yet)
    • Stardew Valley
    • Super Hexagon
    • Vampire Survivors

Thanks very much for the lists, and controls/suitability comments.

I shall have a go at those over next few days. Most probably play Firewatch on the plane because I heard it's good, but never had the patience to experience it.

What's the best version of the most classic Mario to play? Want to introduce Mario to my 5 yo.
