The idea for this mod came when I realized that my rackmount switch fit almost perfectly into this old stereo case. I had a couple old boards lying around, so I decided to make a server cluster into the stereo case with the switch right above.

This is the product of 3 hours of work. I pulled mounting boards out of old cases, as well as cutting out the area around where the psus mounted with my dremel.

    Front drive mounts

next step is to mount a shared CD-ROM drive (a really cool 4-disc changer one), get a CCFL, and add an extending arm for the monitor. A KVM switch would probably be nice too.

nice idea. you should make a plexi side covers for it so dust and liquid doesn't find its way in :) i think it would look great if you made a custom cover the size of the shelf where the PSU's are mounted, and put them on that, looks kind of odd atm.

    very original :thumb:

The backside is going to have a backplate on it with the ATX back panels cut out, and a couple ventilation holes. I know the patching is ugly, that's why we're covering it up :D . The front has a swinging glass door we took off till it's all finished.

The plan right now is for that arm to hold a monitor. It extends and rotates 360, so the only limit will be the monitor cabling. It is a bit heavy though, we need to find a way to add more weight to the bottom.

We'll see how much weight the switch balances

Just mounted the switch. It adds a bit more weight, but the arm still pulls a little much.

I'll have to ask my friend about the inverter required to use a car battery, we were actually thinking about possibly putting this in our "Lan Van" which will probably get it's own topic pretty soon

Portable power would be good. How much power does the switch need?

I don't know how much the switch needs, but I know the boards dont need a bunch, as they are kinda.....vintage.

Does anyone have 64mb+ sticks of SDRAM they'd be willing to part with for the sake of the project?
