hypothetically, if i were to have just pulled apart a fairly recent sony stereo, would i be able to use the lcd? from reading these forums, ive come to understand you need the controlling circuits to use an lcd, and this one has an IC on the back of the board that runs to the lcd. i would take a photo or something, but i dont have a cam : (

Buy an LCD that's made to work with a computer.

How do you know that there is an IC, if you pulled it apart only hypothetically? If the IC has any hypothetical markings you can try to find a datasheet. You can also count the wires that connect the LCD assembly with anything that looks like a CPU. If there are just a few wires (4 to 10) you likely have a serial interface and have a chance to connect something to control it (hypothetically). Could the IC be one of these http://www.st.com/stonline/products/promlit/pdf/fldriverlcd-0302.pdf ?

I think I agree with Explicit, if you just buy the LCD module with an HD44780 controller you'd be better off, they aren't that expensive.

and you call yourselves modders. shame on you. but say i were to buy one of those lcd's you speak of, where would i go about getting one?
the letters on the IC say:
    TC9613
    OM23F-2210

and there are 16 pins for the LCD... so no chance?

Heeey 16 pins you say

That's a good sign. Most parralel LCDs (like the hd44780 ones) have 16 pins. Try and find software that'll work that controller, I'm guessing TC9613 is the number you're looking for. Google it, and if you can find software that'll drive that LCD unit there's no harm in trying... Well there is, if you muck up the pinout you have a chance of frying the LPT port. Some idiot decided that parralel ports dont need short-circuit protection. Just be careful and make absolutely sure you get the pinout right!

But I'm wondering: isn't a stereo LCD a special one with 'loop' and eq settings-type icons? Cos then you only have numbers and letters like fancy car stereos... OR is it really a 2x20 (or more) character display.... Oooh it could also be graphical, that'd be cool for you.

    Good luck!

I whole heartedly agree with you! But TC9613 or OM23F-2210 didn't google anything useful either, so perhaps you are stuck with getting a display (if you absolutely want one). If you live in the US try www.digikey.com . Expect to spend as much as for a low end chassis.

Hmmm. So what you're saying is that the actual LCD has 16 pins.. I thought you meant the board... If the board has 16 connectors on it you could get some free trial software and see what happens when you wire it up...

Oh and by the way, I plan on getting just the LCD module and wiring it up/cutting holes in drive bay frontplate myself, so there :naughty:
