plexi complex Hello there, Defyant. I've abeen keeping an eye on your plexi case mod and I am dumbfounded, I mean what else can I say about your case mod that hasn't already been said? Cool modrig! But I do have some questions, I hope you don't mind me asking. I see your using a router to cut the desired effects you want in your mod and your using router bits, does it matter what kind of router to use? Also, are you using a special bit designed to cut plexi or is it just your run of the mill, wood working router bit? and last are you using a router speed control to get fine feathering, (plexi chips coming off the workpiece from the [router] cuts) . The reason why I ask is that i want to incorporate some plexi in my case mod, I am trying to make a copy and an updated version of the W.O.P.R. computer,(two mods simultaneously ), as seen in the late 80's movie Wargames. But i am also trying to make a prototype of a certain machine that requires tinted and clear plexi can you elaborate on router/router bit on plexi use?
Agreed!!!! i'll try the UV Purple fans and take someshots tongiht Cheers praetor coda I'll be the first to admit! i'm no guru when using power tools! i wanted to make the Front panel frame and Storm Ring! and remember'd i had an old router burried away in the tool box. A very good freind grabbed a me a few fresh router bits from his hardware shop. I do know! the way i'm using the router IS NOT! safe! and in no way guys copy what im doing!!! You really need to be using a proper "router bench" or Table. With a back guard and streight edge. the router im using is a full strenght industial Makita! but i would imagine that even a smaller "Hobby" router would work on plex! The the bit i use is a "Carby" and are supposed to be "top" qual! again! i'm just told this and wouldn't really know. It's standard 45 degree angel'd bit from what i can gather and yes it's a run of the mill wood bit. The router only has the one speed! "FAST" hehe boy it really screems along. The only advise i can really give is to go slow and stead with plex. more because 12mm+ thick plex is so darn expensive and some times the router does bite! and hacks a darn chunk!! Your mod sounds like a great idea !!! can't wait you post it here Cheers all and thanx again guys
Man Defyant, you are an inspiration to us all. I WISH i had the time, resources, patients (spelling??) and skills you have to be able to mod such awesome cases! Keep it up and never stop!!
any hardware store should stock router bits. Nearly any router bit will work fine, as long as its sharp.
Looks great, but i hope you plan on removing the stickers on the fans. Hope to see some more if this. Nice work
You did it again! Damn, I'm happy to see you doing this again. This looks amazing man! I just can't wait to see it finished.
Wow.... the mods just keep coming out of you like a virus! damn i wish you could give me that virus simply awesome modding mate! keep it up. i love the Flame technique to smooth great idea!
Needing an excuse to use my sexy new router bench! i was off to the plex shop today for what will be the second last time in this project. Picking up some "cut to size" panels for what will become STORM'D new overlay side panels.. The Original idea was to leave the case clear! but this case is being "STORM'D" so it needed to be Darkend all round. Using overlay panels keep in with the over all plex theme. 5 new smoked panels and 2 new front clear panels. Starting with the top. These panels are cut to the .5mm and are a perfrct fit! The new side overlay panels fit snug as well. The orignal side clear plex panel has 2 holes already cut for 2 x 80mm fans! thinking that not a bad idea! i decided rather then cover them up! i'll add some storm rings as well and make a full feature.......this won't the the cases main side feature! bigger and more special things for that. Over to the drill press some new rings are cut..... this time rather than make thick clear rings like the front..i decided to go for a more subdue'd sleek look...something that won't stick out like a sore thumb! the rings are made from the same smoked plex as the overlay panels and arefrom 4.5mm thick plex.
The new smoked overlay panel is cut to match up with the original side panel. For now i'll use these fans! but a chrome fans will be brought later to match. The whole assembly-- rings---overlay panel----original panel ----fans can now be bolted together for a test run!!
thanx mate!! ok will do really wanted to get the side "storm vents" perfect! altho they come off looking ok! they still needed a lot more work! I decided that the HEX head bolts i was going to use....didnt suit the side vents as much....a trip back down to the local fastners shop and i came home with these sexy little thangs! these are just perfect! i much prefer the way they will sit flush with the ring . Back of with with side rings and it was time to give em a "flamin" doing the inner small holes and the inner ring itself but leaving the outer angled edge still with a machined look. With that done! i relised that there was no way to slide the side panel off with the fans still attached to the inside of the case!!! a qik fix was to make the whole overlay panel and fans/storm rings as one unit! then bolt that unit onto the orig side panel. a large clean sqr opening is cut and flamed smooth. Fans panel and ring assemble are bolted together then layed onto the orig panel and bolted on Somthing still wasnt right!......they just didnt look "finsihed" a qik think about it...
they need mesh! the solution was some old 8" car speakers i had under the bench! a small frame jig is made from some scrap plex..this will be used to "press" the shape into the new grills. a ruff cut is done, with plenty of excess this is soo much fun! after a qick trim! big smile for D and with the freshly flamed rings and new bolts! bigger smiles for D. onto the second one!!! slide it in!
i know its a lotta hoopla over somthing small but its getting the small things just right that really give me a buzz!
