Right, I have a spare pc, gonna make it a second server maybe!, anyway its got a 80gb maxtor hard drive atm, I put in the windows xp cd or 2003. I boot of the cd, it loads up fine, format hard drive, all ok. Right then it copies the files over to get ready for the installtion. But when it reboots is says "Error loading from Operationg System". I've messed around with jumpers, ide cables... The only problem with this mobo, it doesnt keep bios settings... (Dead battery or faulty I think). when you turn it off, it restores settings to defult. It's fine if you just leave it on tho... But I can't see that to be the problem, as I have used this motherboard before . Thanks alot Sc0rian
I would get a new battery tbh. The cmos settings include something that tells your HD there's an OS on it.
hmmmm, odd one replace the battery, simply because you should. the mobo's are made to have a battery in them, it makes them happy secondly, might want to check what the drive was used for before you did this. it may have multiple partitions on it. if it does, just remove them all and have one partition, makes things much easier (make sure your not going to delete your last 5 years work or anything before you delete the partitions). maybe its loading from the wrong partition, or maybe your mobo needs a new battery.... as an afterthought, see if your bios will let you do a low level hdd surface check for bad sectors/tracks. you may just have a dodgy sector. before now ive had a machine that consistently failed to install win98, turned out there was a bad sector, and win98 was putting one of its uber-essential files on it, once i had done the bios scan for bad tracks and marked it as unusable, it went on fine.
not sure this applies, but ive had problems installing xp on a machine that had a dodgy psu, and also on another one with memory timings tweaked ... after i reset the bios it worked just fine ...
I like the low level format idea, but what do you know about this MoBo and the HD? Are they stable? Are you familiar with them? What are the BIOS settings regarding the device? Is there an option to try multiple devices? Are you sure the first device its trying to boot from on the re-boot is the HD? Are you sure there's not a conflict between the HD and the CD? Are they on the same cable? Are their jumpers set properly? Have you used them together before? Can you try them on different IDE controllers? It could be dirty power making the HD mad - are you familiar with this PSU? If its a power issue, it might be getting up to speed in time to write to it from the CD, but not in time to boot from it. Have you tried unplugging the power connector and re-plugging it? Also, you might consider removing every non-essential PCI / IDE / IO device and try it that way. Maybe even try the PSU from your primary computer. When you format the drive, is the whole thing there (reported) in a single partition? Did you do a quick format or a complete format of the drive? Am I correct - you have tried both xp and 2003 with the same results? How far along into the re-boot does it get when you get this error? The other thing I would consider of course is an alternate HD or cable. P.S. You might not have gotten any help because it sounds like what you're doing is illegal. But I am sure you know about license agreements and such and wouldn't be asking help from someone so that you may break the law.
I had the exact same problem, it turned out to be the cable. I think stuff was getting corrupted as it was copied due the cable dodgyness, and i kept getting a similar error to you. I just played about with the cables, think i solved it by using my best two cables and having the CDROM as master on its own channel. Good luck
Ok Well I did a fall scan (took like 8 hours..) This is the result.. Code: SeaTools Desktop v3.00.06 Copyright (c) 2004 Kroll Ontrack Inc. 1/1/2001 @ 3:57 AM The following information has been generated by SeaTools Desktop. Here are the answers What are the BIOS settings regarding the device? Which one? I s there an option to try multiple devices? Can't say I have looked. Are you sure the first device its trying to boot from on the re-boot is the HD? Have had a go with that Are you sure there's not a conflict between the HD and the CD? Are they on the same cable? No they aint, I have messed with all the ide plugs etc Are their jumpers set properly? Yeah they are fine Have you used them together before? Yeah I have Can you try them on different IDE controllers? I can't say I can... It could be dirty power making the HD mad - are you familiar with this PSU? If its a power issue, it might be getting up to speed in time to write to it from the CD, but not in time to boot from it. The psu is good ... Have you tried unplugging the power connector and re-plugging it? Also, you might consider removing every non-essential PCI / IDE / IO device and try it that way. Maybe even try the PSU from your primary computer. Yeah have had a go When you format the drive, is the whole thing there (reported) in a single partition? Did you do a quick format or a complete format of the drive? Done both Am I correct - you have tried both xp and 2003 with the same results? Yep xp and 98 How far along into the re-boot does it get when you get this error? Just after its formatted, copied the files, the start of it.. Reboots to finish installtion off. Thats when.. Thats the answers
Sounds like your IDE controller might have been fried; the same thing happened to me when it went on my really old PC's mobo.
Ner, I put another hard drive in it, it booted from xp fine.. (didnt load it tho due to it being out of barebone
