well this is a new one on me: when I try to put my computer to sleep - (standby) it starts out as usual - windows shuts down, the power light goes off, but the fans are still running, as are the hard-drives. any suggestions?
That's what happens with my system. You might wanna try hibernate instead. Where the contents of the RAM is written to the HDD and the system halts. You can enable hibernation in XP from it's tab, from the "power" button of the screen saver thing. After enabling hibernation, go to the drop down menus at the bottom of the "advanced" tab also in power settings.
I thought that was what is meant to happen when you put it in standby. The screen goes off but the computer is still running just with lower power consumption. Then there are individual settings in power saving to say if you want the hard drives to power down.
i'm sure that about a week ago, when I put my system into standby the fans would stop - in fact the computer would be silent, but now it's not...
I see the same thing but if I let it sit for a while the fans turn off. Is the motherboard trying to cool the system down before it turns off the fans? My hard drives do turn off.
there are different types of standby. You want s3 if I remember correctly or what is known as ACPI suspend to ram. Look in you bios and enable it, I'm pretty sure that there is an option in windows as well but I can't find it just now. Support for it is sketchy usually but it can be made to work.
