I am wondering what these strange smudge/lines are on my LCD, I've had this in the top right corner since mid-2010. It did not bother me too much because it's difficult to see unless there is a bright background on it. But a new smudge has appeared on the center right since yesterday, prompting me to hunt for a new replacement monitor now.

    Photos, click to enlarge:

White background again, changed to fluorescent setting on phone camera:

    New "smudge" on center right:

They are not scratches or fingerprints, I have used cleaning fluid and lint-free cloth many times for dust cleaning but those areas remain unchanged, I can't feel any texture on the LCD either, which probably means it's behind the screen. Only thing I can notice is the top-right corner feels warmer to the touch than other corners.

Just wondering what it is, so I can avoid it when I get a new monitor, thanks :)

If your screen works fine.. I would keep it until you can get more money and get a nice IPS panel... What I am thinking, is if you are about to buy a new monitor, and your not a super fast hummingbird wing action reflects hard core FPS Super Sargent Elite shooter player: Might as well get a much better screen.

Of course, budget... if you can't afford it, then it's ok, but if you are close to be able to afford it.. then maybe you can hold off for a month or so until you collect more funds.

*IPS panels, like TN panels, monitor warranty doesn't any damages due of the action of throwing your cat or guinea pig, or bunny at your screen.

I have been thinking about getting my first IPS panel yeah, especially your recommendation of the U2410.

Although I do a lot of gaming, and almost nothing of graphics work, so maybe a cheaper HP IPS model could be considered instead. I do have the budget to purchase a Dell U2410 but I hate spending that much unless I can be convinced it's worth it (and get 5+ years out of it)

edit: 24" minimum too, got poor eyesight and I'm led to think 22/23" with 1920x1080/1200 would have tiny text.

To be honest.. the Dell U2410 is not for a professionals at all.
A professional will use it's own color calibrator, want uniform back light, because for them this is critical, and even better CFL lamp or even RGB back light for those with deep pocket. And if they want a monitor just for work, then get a PVA panel instead, which provide excellent blacks (but much slower and high input lag... no good for many gaming and action movies)

    The question comes down to:
    > Do you want easy out of the box setup (install, set the color profile to Adobe RGB or sRGB, and voila stunning colors)
    > Do you want all the input connections (I started by not needing them when I got mine.. but now I use them. I plug my Wii, and my VHS to watch analogue cable TV (cheaper than buying a descent TV tuner, especially than I am only watching maybe once a week)) and my laptop)
    > Do you care about the OSD menu easy navigation
    > And looks (which ever model you prefer the looks)

I can't say if the monitor will last 5 years+. As it all comes down to manufacturing process. I might be lucky and get 10 years, but yours might break a day after the warranty ends. But seeking how bright the U2410 (I leave it at 20-30% brightness (50% default)). At least I know that there is plenty of room to compensate for the CFL light wear. (CFL lamps reduce illumination over time (and turn the lamp itself turns from white color to dark dust in the tube (end of life of the phosphor)))

At work I have some cheap ass 7 year old Dell TN panel... they are an abomination. but still works. In fact, I never recall any Dell monitor break. Usually if they break it is within the first year.

did you get to the bottom of the screen fault? Over rigorous cleaning?
    Or just a fault?

Settled on it being an LCD grid crack going by comments, probably from age. I think it's nearing 4 years old now. I clean once a month on average.

There is where your parents took the duster and Mr Sheen to it.

On a more serious note: Don't let any one near your monitor.

Say if I do go for a U2410, is there any panel lottery or such? Can't recall if there was certain revisions of the U2410 that is preferred over others.

Nope. You'll get the exact same LG panels

My 3 year old generic LCD monitor from PCWorld has took a hell of a beating. It has fell off the dodgy shelf I have it placed on 3 times now, a 3 foot fall on to a hardwood floor! I cannot remember the last time I even cleaned it tbh (maybe that is a good thing though going by what has been said) It works just as well as the day I first unboxed it.

The lottery was for the 2007WFP and early versions of the LP2475W, now the U2410 and the LP2475W are all LG H-IPS panels.
