My current computer is a Dell, I'm running XP sp2. I have 2 USB slots in the front and 5 in the back. I don't know how the front ones are attached but the back ones are directly on the motherboard.

Now one day I plugged my phone into my computer and my phone played the sound signifying it was working. Then I went back onto the computer and the mouse wouldn't move. I tried replugging it in and eventually just ctrl alt deleted and restarted the computer. It still didn't work when it restarted so I tried a different USB mouse which also didn't work. Then I found an old USB to PS2 converter and used that and started the computer and the mouse worked.

Then I tried all my USB devices like my printer, cell phone again, other mice, a flash drive, the wacom. Nothing works. It's worth mentioning however that with mice the laser comes on, and with flash drives the little light on the drive comes on, and with the cellphone the phone plays the sound like its plugged in but I can't use Active Sync and get anything from it. They are also all detected in device manager. I've tried reinstalling the USB drivers with no effect.

Anyone have any advice? I think they make PCI USB cards right? Thanks.

Sounds like a conflict in the drivers of something.
Does USB work when you unplug your phone (and restart your computer)?

I think I've read somebody else having same kind of problems, but I don't remember the solution. :(

The front USB connectors are attached to the motherboard with a cable. :thumb:

I've tried nothing plugged into any USB slots except the mouse (mice) and the same thing with all the other devices, none of them work independently or with one another :( its pretty weird.

I'd open device manager, right-click on anything usb related and select uninstall.
    Don't restart if asked to.

Then reboot your system once you've uninstalled everything that could be remotely USB related.
It should detect the hardware again and install the drivers.
Has fixed a lot of similar problems for me in the past. :)

intel chipset? try downloading and installing the "inf update utility" for your specific chipset from their website.
