its a fantastic idea though really I think 30ms is too much to actually be able to play the online games in any competative nature but really I guess any serious gamer will be sat on the machine directly anyway.
Good for the kids, if you have any. Also good when you get your mates round you can all have a nice game of worms sat round the TV :)

Not that the latest worms games (worms 3d etc.) are that great. But just imagine worms united in high def on a 42" TV!! :D

playing with 30ms between the client and the gameserver could be ok
but playing with 30ms between video and controls on keyboard/mouse/etc is ******** :)

(think about those _gaming_ with wireless crappy mouses etc, that are less lagghy than 30)

Interesting concept, but we'll need a LOT more CPU power before it'll work. We need under 5ms (preferably down to 1ms or so) going from the powerhouse to the client, and 1ms or so going back with the keyboard controls. Because that lag is very critical to gameplay. I was playing some CS:S yesterday for the first time in a couple months, was going about 5:1 (!) and got kicked for high ping, not noticing that I had Azureus downloading stuff in the background. I didn't check but I'd assume I was over 150ms.

Anyways, you'll need dual-core at a very minimum for it to work, one for what currently happens on a proc, the other for the MPEG2 encoding. And I don't see it encoding a lossless 1600x1200 signal and piping it to another computer which displays that signal in under five milliseconds, which would be my minimum (or perhaps 1080p, which is only slightly higher-def)

And I'll tell you, my formerly* SLi rig isn't very loud, and certainly never bothers me for noise reasons. I'd rather not game on a TV even if it's taking in a 1080p signal, because those of us with the powerhouse PCs running high-def resolutions or 4:3 equivalents with 4xAA 8xAF are doing it for the image quality, and taking an image on a 19" screen and stretching it to a 42"+ screen doesn't quite work wonders for the eye sex.

So basically, it's not for me.

*till I crushed the crap out of the 6800gt's voltage reg chips installing a new waterblock

    Firehed,

The VIIV chips are going to be designed with MPEG encoding as part of the "on the fly" stuff built into the design...should be an interesting concept, though I won't own one of those chips for the life of me (DRM...shudder).
