This is a technical query so hope it's in the right section as I didn't know where else to really put it lol. Anyway, I use a program called Tversity to stream video from my PC to my PS3 and was just wondering if streaming from my PC to the PS3 via Tversity actually counts to wards my internet streaming usage? The reason I ask is because I'm with Plusnet and have an 80GB a month usage allowance (from midnight to 8am is FREE and doesn't count towards that limit) and I noticed for today it says I've used 10% of my FREE usage for streaming but I haven't watched anything streamed on a website, I was streaming from my PC to the PS3 so it appears it's counting any data streamed from my PC to the PS3 as if I'm watching it online, is that supposed to happen? Because I thought even if I had no internet connection I would be able to stream from the PC to the PS3 via an internal/home network anyway as long as I had a router that enabled communication between the PC and PS3? Or am I way off the mark? Because to my knowledge streaming is commonly known as being used for the below, Streaming = Playing online media, such as radio or TV that download as you watch or listen And technically I am downloading from my PC to my PS3 but that's not classed as internet usage is it? Information greatfully received. Thank you
It shouldn't do. If it is sending media from YOUR PC directly to your PS3 then it's entirely within your home LAN. Try unplugging your internet and seeing if it works, otherwise I'd worry why it needs to go via a TVersity server just to stream - what are they doing with that data? If you're watching 'premium content' that'll be from the net = internets usage.
If its going from the PC to the PS3 via a TVersity server I am sure it would be a laggy so its unlikely to be counting towards your usage allowance. Of course if it is then it will count double as you are uploading it and downloading it.
Turns out it was NOT counting towards my usage as I checked, funny thing is though it's impossible to stream to the PS3 without having an internet connection (aka the phone line cable plugged into the router) in order to get the ADSL service. Surely if I'm streaming from the PC to the PS3 I don't actually need an internet connection do I? If it's not actually using the internet! Because I would have thought it just needed the equipment (the router) to enable me to stream from the PC the PS3 with no actual need to have the internet?
Yes. I would be extremely curious WHY it needs to connect to the net? Did you pay for TVersity - is it checking for a license?
No I didn't pay for it, it's free for personal use but just seems strange when I don't allow it access to the 'internet' it won't stream anything! Bearing in mind even if I deny it access to the 'internet' it does still have access to the network connection so it should still be able to connect the PS3 and PC for streaming purposes. I might try reinstalling it (probably won't make a difference though) and if it doesn't I'll just have to find another program to stream with, I'm only using TVersity because it was recommended for streaming to the PS3 as well, and it does work very well, just puzzled as to why it insists on wanting the internet before it streams anything, even though I've checked and it doesn't actually use the internet!
If you have to find a new program I recommend PS3 Media Server. I used it a while back and it seemed to work fairly well.
I use PS3media server. It is nice. not looked for anything else, recently started encoding to mkv so will see how it handles that
