Here in Denver we have a problem with street cruising turning into unsanctioned street races. Honda civics with B motors and turbos cruising the street looking for the occasional exhibition of speed. I'm impartial as long as they do it late at night when children and people walking are absent. I used to street race a new Hemi Roadrunner back in Iowa. The last couple of months we have had a new player in Westminster. A dead black Lambo Gallardo. This thing is sweet to the power of 10! Marilyn and I raced it across an intersection - until he let out the clutch and just vanished. We sit here at night in the dark time and hear the howl of 12 cyl. let loose. Do the UK and EU people have street racing and cruising? I would think the unlimited speed motorways would draw the cars out of residential areas. Thoughts. john PS: The Lambo blew away the Enzo last night. Everybody at the Dairy Queen with cameras. Unforgettable. These cars cause as much excitement as the Denver Broncos. Both are driven by males in their 20s or 30s.
no cops around or do they not really care as long as it's not in heavy traffic and not in residential areas?
I stayed in London (Kensington, if it matters) for two weeks a few years ago and I had to close the windows at night because of all the cars racing down the road in the middle of the night. So I would guess there's somewhat of problem.
Both and it's a 5 lane street. 2 lanes both ways and a center turning lane. What's cool is that the race crowd parks across streets and apartment driveways to block traffic. Sort of a concerted effort to make it safer for the exhibition races. Fun to watch in the dark. Streets empty and access blocked off by race fans. Looks like end of the world movie with no traffic. From 80th Ave. North to 84th Ave. is flat. From 84th North is a BIG arse overpass for a train tracks underneath. Great slowdown site. Not condoning mind you but it is well thought out. Now where are my neighbors with their Hemi Roadrunner and V8 Vega. john
I'm a Colonial who never made it back to the homeland of Ireland. It's not possible in UK or happens a lot? john I need to tape the Gallardo for you guys. Got Gallardos in your 'hood? EBIL machinery even for Denver with an NHRA dragstrip at Morrison, CO. Bandimere. http://www.bandimere.com/
Seems all we have in Virginia is the ricers, stock Hondas with paint jobs and body kits on them, to each there own tho. I've seen a few videos of cars racing in the UK, not sure on how popular it is tho.
I don't know what it's like now as i'm no longer into it, but back in the late 90's i'd be at cruises every week end with my friend in his Ford Escort (RS 2000 engine / gearbox, lowered on Koni's). This was a quick car, I swear I would get out when he dropped me off back home with whip lash from the gear changes. There wern't that many races then and the Police were always all over the place, saw a few break out though. It was usually silly boys in their dad's standard 2 liter Ford Mondeo's picking on little "1.6" Vaxhall Corsa. Who then were then left for dead because the owner had squeezed in a 2 liter turbo'd Vaxhall Calibra lump. Was a right laugh. Most of it though was all about looking good, or trying too with loads of dohnuts, burnouts mixed with the odd fight. We only ever had the odd exotic (Ferrari, Aston Martin) that I can remember. Usually though it got a bit better with a mix of Jap imports like Skylines, Supras, and even an NSX once if I remember right. As for racing, I was in a few, but it all calmed down when one of the lads Fiat Uno Turbo broke (read he was doing over 120mph when flames started coming from under the bonet), the few I was in we clocked about 140mph and left the people we were with far far behind. At the time I was only 17 ish and I remember thinking "**** thats quick" as lampost's wizzed by, all I could think of was the Millenium Falcon as it makes the jump to Hyperspeed.
I was under the impression that the Gallardo is a V10, and the Murcielago is the V12... forgive me being full of it though. I'm pretty sure street racing happens everywhere. Around here (and remember - far corner of the planet), you've got it happening with everything at pretty much all times: Chevy Lumina SS (Monaro VXR in other parts of the planet) T5 Volvos 320/330/335 BMW's A3 Audis Golf GTI's Polo GTI's and my personal favourite: Toyota Starlet GT's. They are my faves because they are always driven by 19 year olds that think they're quick... i've dropped several of those with my 2.4i volvo.
Haha there a a gud few startlets in my area and they thought they were quick too, think the sensation of speed in a small car makes them think this I did alittle but it was usually impromtu. the gaurds are different everythings abit more local over here. and our roads are terrible, just terrible lol losing my licence a few years ago kinda put me off and someone wrote of my VTS last year only doin 30 mph and the thought of what would happen if it was at 60 puts me way off should be getting a type r in a few months so well see how i feel then
Some of the starlets here are pretty quick... but those you can hear a mile off... big turbos and dumbvalves make a very distinct noise... if you don't hear that, it's a kiddo that thinks he's quick... Mate of mine used to street race with his VW Caddy (don't think you get them in europe. it's a Golf 1/City Golf based pickup). Dropped a 1.8T engine from an Audi S3 in there, replaced the turbo with a 52mm monster, wastegate controllers, etc... think 242kw on 900kg then he worked on the aero and turned it into a track car...
There was a kid with a bean can exhaust squealing around the car park at the top of town a few nights ago, but generally no street racing on that scale this far down Cornwall. Most of the roads narrow to single track with high granite hedgerows. We do have an annual RWYB, ironically cancelled this year for various reasons, although it's more a bike and big block affair. I took my bike down last year, big fun. http://www.firstandlastmcc.co.uk/sprint/index.htm
I wouldn't say we have street racers so much as retarded ricers who think they're street racers - With Honda Type R badges on their Vauxhall Corsa's. Yes. Honda badges on Vauxhalls. The UK is more about body kits and giant exhausts on **** cars than it is street racing. It doesn't help that any road straight enough and with a good enough road surface to race on has more speed cameras per square foot than Snake Island has venomous snakes per square foot. Course not - You're a good girl :B
bmw drivers are too busy tailgating to race anyone scared the **** outa one this morning in a 1 series(couldnt afford a proper one i guess) was right on my tail somewhere he couldnt/wouldnt overtake anyway, braked, scared the crap outa him, didnt stop him doin it again five mins down the road but there you go.
It's assholes like that which make me wish I could afford to get repairs done without involving insurance companies. Tailgating is the most obnoxious thing to do in the world.
But it's OK because they are far more important than us and have somewhere to be. Didn't you know we only exist to get in their way?
