People have been noodling around with the iPhone beta 2 software, and have discovered this gem buried away in the code:

AppleInsider - Latest iPhone 2.0 beta reveals 3G chipset
    Gizmodo - 3G iPhone's Upcoming Chip Found?

So even if Walt is retracting his '60 day' statment, it looks like it'll be 3g sooner rather than later.

Which begs the question to all of you 2.5g iPhoners out there - Will you be upgrading? I'm in two minds over it. I've had mine since launch day here in the UK, so I've only had mine since November. Edge speeds for me (when I'm in range of an Edge base station) seem perfectly reasonable. The only reason I can see to upgrade would be for the enhanced coverage, as Edge isn't very widespread here.

I'm sort if 50/50 on an upgrade at the moment. I don't need 3G. But I'm sure I'll want one when they announce / release one. :)

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/09/o2_speed_limits/ may be of interest. Apparently O2 limit 3G connections to 128Kb/s for the vast majority of their customers so it's arguable whether any speed increase you might get from a 3G iPhone (which may not even be the case) would be worth the cost of the upgrade.

Well I'm glad you've pointed this out if anything- I've felt a little underwhelmed by the quantity of 3g iPhone speculation on the internet...

Can't say that I'll be upgrading anytime soon. The cost of the data plan would very likely increase, and there's no 3G coverage where I live anyways. Then again, there's no 2.5G coverage at home either, though it's full strength at work. It's perfectly acceptable speeds when you've got signal.

Still, people are talking about a 3g iPhone as if it's an "if" rather than a "when". I'm pretty sure that Jobs said at the original announcement keynote that when 3g chipsets are more effecient and don't murder battery life as much, it'll happen.

I won't be upgrading--no 3G coverage here either, but I get EDGE coverage almost everywhere I go.

£100 slashed off the price of the 8GB from tomorrow apparently, so only £169...seriously tempted to get one and 'avoid' the O2 contract.

It's worth it tbh. I paid the full $600 at launch, and while I was unhappy that the price dropped so much so quickly state-side, it was still worth the full price, and I'd buy it again at that price. Within reason of course, if I know there's a price drop or upgrade due in a couple days I'd wait, but the $200 premium wouldn't have been worth waiting an extra six or eight months.

    That's pretty tempting tbh, that's a decent price for a contract-free phone... :D

It won't technically be contract free, you pay your £169 for the phone and in theory you can then only use it with the O2 contracts. But using ZIPhone or similar will get you around that.

Now £169 on the O2 website, Carphone Warehouse haven't changed their price yet but should do sometime today.

How do you get them to hand over a phone without signing on the dotted line? Can you get them from the Apple Store sans contract?

I'm not sure if the Apple Store are doing the £100 off deal, but if they were then you should be able to. The model is based around having to activate the phone on itunes and to activate it you have to sign up for the O2 contract in the process. I may be wrong but I don't think you sign the contract at the point of sale from any retailer.

plenty of bs they could never get away with since it violates about every law in existance and goes against any form of common sense...

anyway, as others have said, your forced into registering for a o2 iphone only contract (separate contracts for them) when activating at home over itunes, so you can unlock it before signing the contract and then just use any sim card since you never reach the point where you have to sign up to o2.

If 3G comes i will be very tempted as Edge sucks in finland! 3G on the other hand works almost everywhere. It just comes down to the price!

I think I'll just stick with my original iPhone and if I need more speed I'll get a non-ATT broadband card for my laptop.
