    Anybody else giggle?

This might sound crazy, but what about buying a PC without a graphics card? Would your dad go for that? Core i3 processor, H55 motherboard, integrated graphics, 4GB RAM, Windows 7, big PSU, shiny case etc, and if your grades improve, your dad buys a dedicated graphics card as an add-in gift.

You won't be gaming on it (well, at least not outside of Facebook games or Desktop Tower Defence etc), but it'll increase your productivity a fair margin, and any upgrades you want to make (bigger HDD, faster processor, shiny GTX460) are drop-in upgrades that can be made at any time.

    Yes, that's be a great idea! :)
My dad won't have the "gaming"-argument anymore, so it will be hard for him to come up with anything else...
I will be more productive and, after a while, I can show him some better results and how "productive" I was. And then, maybe, the whole "gaming"-problem will be solved too!
    Thank you! (left):thumb:(right):thumb:

Maverick Will: I suggested that a while ago in a post on page 4, but I guess it got overlooked... :sigh: It seems to make the most sense the Dad seems to have had a problem with gaming in the past, possibly becoming addicted to generals... easily done! In that case don't give him that to use against you as ammo!

Ah, you're always welcome, mate. Though you should give some credit to the guy below too!

Plus, if you're recording music, there's a fairly thriving community of musicians kicking about here, so I'm sure once you're up and running, we'll be able to get some community-based music projects on the go to show your dad what you can REALLY do! ;)

And, if all else fails, buy a pre-owned Xbox. Completely avoid the PC argument there, and keep money for when your dad gives in. :naughty:

Apparently, I was beaten to the punch. Still, great minds, eh?

On a (sort of) related note, my little Northwood P4 server in the workshop is playing up today! Sadface :/

Maybe if it actually just gives up and dies this time I'll be able to bite the bullet and justify buying a new rackmount unit to replace it in the new year. today it was doing absolutely fine as a backup server. I think the old IDE primary disk is starting to go though. It's never struggled with anything I asked of it though, and it's had a 4TB array attached via a PCI card since day 1.
